YODER – The Southeast Lady Cyclones split their weekend games, falling at home Friday to second-ranked Lusk 56-42, before picking up a 49-41 win on the road Saturday against Burns.
Lusk 56, Southeast 42
Southeast came out hot Friday, opening the game with a 13-10 lead after the first quarter. Lusk turned things around in the second frame, outscoring Southeast 12-5 to go into the break up 22-18. The Lady Cyclones could not keep pace with the Lady Tigers, allowing 13 points in the third quarter and 21 in the fourth, while scoring nine and 15 points of their own. After the fourth-quarter explosion by both teams, Lusk still sealed the 14-point win.
Hailey Anderson had a solid game, pacing Southeast with 10 points and three steals. She also tied for the team lead with six rebounds.
Ellie Schmitt and Kaci Schmick poured in nine points apiece, while Schmitt also finished the night with six rebounds, including two offensive, and four assists. Morgan Ekwall also notched three assists on the night.
As a team, Southeast made 13 trips to the free-throw line, knocking down eight of their attempts. Lusk went 12-of-29 from the charity stripe.
Southeast 49, Burns 41
Opposite to Friday, Southeast was outmanned out of the gates Saturday against Burns, falling behind 13-9 after the first frame. By halftime, the Lady Broncs built a 26-19 lead after outscoring the Lady Cyclones 13-10 in the second quarter. Southeast started clawing their way back into the game in the third, putting up 13 points and limiting Burns to nine to bring the score to 35-32, still in favor of Burns. Southeast exploded for 17 points in the fourth and the Lady Broncs mustered only six, allowing the Lady Cyclones to come around them at the end.
Anderson had another top-notch game, turning in 20 points and seven rebounds, both of which were team-highs. Ekwall stepped up in the scoring column with nine points, while also accounting for four boards. Schmitt matched Ekwall’s efforts on the boards with four rebounds.
Whitney Foos recorded six assists on the night and Schmick added three steals.
The Lady Cyclones upped their trips to the free-throw line, where they shot 17-of-23. Burns was limited to 10-of-15 shooting from the line.
Southeast improved to 10-9 on the year with a 3-3 record in the conference. They sit third in the standings behind Lusk (17-2, 6-1) and Pine Bluffs (15-5, 6-1). The Lady Cyclones close out the regular season with two home games this weekend, taking on Pine Bluffs on Friday and Glenrock on Saturday, both with 4:30 p.m. start times.
