Lady Cyclones handle Burns at home

YODER – A double-double by Ellie Schmitt helped the Southeast Lady Cyclones get back on the winning track Tuesday with a 46-32 win over conference opponent Burns.

Southeast got out to a hot start, outscoring the Lady Broncs 14-6 in the first quarter, but the home team lost some ground in the second quarter. Burns poured in 12 points in the second frame, while limiting Southeast to 10 to give the Lady Cyclones a 24-18 lead at the break.

“I thought we started the game well, but the second quarter did not go very well for us,” coach Jennifer Scheer said. “We lost our focus and we allowed Burns to gain some traction.”

After some halftime adjustments, the Lady Cyclones ratcheted down on defense, stifling Burns and holding them to two points in the third quarter, while scoring eight points of their own to up their lead to 32-20. In the fourth, Southeast matched its first-quarter output with 14 points, while the Lady Broncs accounted for 12 points in the final eight minutes of action.

“When we got the momentum back in our favor, I liked where we were at,” Scheer said.

Schmitt had a standout game, tallying 14 points and 13 boards, both of which led the Lady Cyclones. Six of her rebounds came on the offensive end of the floor. She also paced Southeast in assists, with five, and steals, with three.

Hailey Anderson had a solid outing, racking up eight points, seven rebounds, three assists and two steals. Whitney Foos also accounted for eight points, while Macie Murphy had two steals to her credit. The Lady Cyclones had six players score four or more points in the game.

“We have to be able to have a lot of girls be able to score because teams obviously know where Hailey and Ellie are at all times,” Scheer said. “I was happy with the contributions from the other girls and my bench.”

The win over Burns upped the Lady Cyclones’ record to 7-6 on the season, with a 1-1 record against conference opponents. Southeast returns to the floor Saturday for their third conference game in a row when they hit the road to play Glenrock, with a 3 p.m. start.

“It’s always competitive in the conference. Every night is a fight,” Scheer said. “The only thing we can control is ourselves. It’s a one-game season every night for us. It’s anybody’s conference at this point.”
