Lady Cyclones get road win in Guernsey

GUERNSEY – The Southeast High School volleyball team picked up its ninth win of the season on Tuesday night with a 3-1 (25-15, 25-13, 21-25, 25-10) win over the Guernsey-Sunrise Lady Vikings.

Guernsey kept the opening set close early. After a serving error by the Lady Cyclones, cut their lead to 9-8, and it proved to be the closest the Lady Vikings came to seeing the lead the first set.

Back-to-back kills by senior Kylee Llewellyn helped the Lady Cyclones start to slowly pull away from Guernsey in the opening set.

In the second set, the home team jumped on Southeast early. Trailing 4-1, the Lady Cyclones called a timeout. Coming out of the break, Southeast scored seven of the next nine points to take an 8-6 lead.

The Lady Vikings tied the game at nine, but the Lady Cyclones scored 16 of the next 20 points to close out the set and take a 2-0 match lead.

In the third set, a block by junior Brooklyn Leithead gave Southeast a 1-0 lead, and the Lady Cyclones held the lead until 6-5. Guernsey tied the set at six and an attack error by Southeast handed the lead to the Lady Vikings. Guernsey never trailed again for the remainder of the set.

In the fourth set, the Lady Cyclones used an 8-0 run to lift them to the set and match win.

Tied at five, Llewellyn’s kill sparked the run as Southeast pulled away for the 15-point set win.

Junior Angie Logsdon led the team with 10 kills, while Llewellyn added eight. Sophomore Hadley Leithead tallied five of the team’s 11 stuff blocks. Senior Baylie Booth led the team with two aces, while senior Sasha Haines tallied 20 digs.

The Lady Cyclones (9-5 overall and 3-0 in the 1A Southeast Quadrant) will play two road matches on Saturday. They begin play at Rock River (8-3 and 2-1) at 11 a.m. and will travel to Hanna to face Hanna-Elk Mountain (1-12 and 0-2) at 3 p.m.
