CASPER – As a third seed last week at the 2A East Regional Tournament, the Southeast Lady Cyclones rattled off two upset wins, and they will be looking to do the same at the state tournament this weekend.

Southeast locked up the second seed from the east after going 2-1 last weekend at regionals. The Lady Cyclones’ first action comes Thursday after press time against Rocky Mountain, who is the third seed from the west and ranked fourth in the final season rankings by WyoPreps. The Lady Grizzlies are 19-5 on the year, but after going 3-1 at last weekend’s west regional tournament, they fell to the third seed. Southeast and Rocky Mountain met Dec. 15, with the Lady Grizzlies taking a 32-29 win.

Wyoming Indian or Lusk await Southeast after the first round, depending on Thursday’s results. The Lady Chiefs marched their way to a first-place finish at the 2A West Regional Tournament, sitting at 19-7 on the year. Lusk has the best record in 2A, sitting at 21-3 on the year. The Lady Tigers slipped up twice at the regional tournament, sliding into the fourth seed from the east.

Lusk had the edge over Southeast twice during the regular season, but the Lady Cyclones picked up the win in the postseason, beating the Lady Tigers 43-35 at the regional tournament. In the season opener this winter, Wyoming Indian beat Southeast 47-31.

Sundance is the top seed for the other side of the bracket, after beating Southeast 43-21 in championship game of the 2A East Regional Tournament. Sundance is 20-3 on the year and were ranked third in the final rankings from WyoPreps.

Lovell (14-8), Pine Bluffs (20-6) and Wind River (11-14) round out the other half of the bracket. Southeast is 0-2 against Pine Bluffs this winter and has not faced Lovell or Wind River this season.

If Southeast has its sights set on the state title game, it may take an upset or two for the Lady Cyclones to get there.
