SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. – The Torrington Lady Trailblazers swept Scottsbluff in three sets on the road Tuesday, but it did not come easy, as the three sets were decided by a combined 12 points.
The first set was the closest of the three, decided by two points. Kills by Ashley Schlagel and Logan Murphy put the Lady Blazers out to an early 4-1 lead. After three Torrington errors, Murphy smashed home another kill to stop the slide, but two points later and the two teams were tied at seven. The two teams traded the next 13 points, before the Lady Bearcats scored two in a row to lead 15-13.
With the set tied at 18, Adia Sherbeyn got the Lady Blazers on track, recording a kill and giving Torrington the lead. Later in the set, she had back-to-back aces, forcing a Scottsbluff timeout with the score at 22-19. After the break, the visitors upped their lead to 24-20. The Lady Bearcats did not back down, scoring four-straight points to knot the score at 24. Murphy slammed the door shut with two-straight kills to give Torrington the 26-24 win.
In the second set, Torrington didn’t trail once. The score was tied at one apiece, but the Lady Blazers held an advantage on every point through the rest of the set. Back-to-back kills by Paige Miller and Nakalyn Garner put Torrington up 9-4. After a Lady Bearcat timeout, the lead was trimmed to one (11-10), but the Lady Blazers got on another run. A block by Schlagel capped a six-point roll for Torrington, putting the score at 17-10.
Scottsbluff again made a late rally, trimming its deficit to two points (20-18), but two errors at the end of the set by the Lady Bearcats gave Torrington the 25-20 win.
The Lady Blazers held a two-point lead twice within the first 10 points of the third set, but Scottsbluff scored four in a row to wrestle away the lead and build an 8-6 lead of their own. An ace by the Lady Bearcats, giving them a 10-7 lead, forced a timeout called by Torrington coach Chelsi Jackson.
Torrington brought the score to 12 apiece and Scottsbluff and Torrington went on another trading spree, splitting the next 12 points to put the score at 18-18. Torrington scored three-straight with Murphy getting a kill and a block, followed by a kill from Schlagel. Murphy again closed out the set, recording three kills on the final four points, giving the Lady Blazers a 25-20 win.
As a team, Torrington racked up 42 aces, with Murphy, who had 18, pacing the team. Sherbeyn added eight, while Garner kicked in five. Schlagel added four and Katelynn Wright had three. Paige Miller, Brielle Bivens and Brooklyn Tucker combined for four kills on the night.
At the service line, Sherbeyn had a solid night, racking up five of Torrington’s six aces, with the other coming from Taylor Walsh.
Walsh and Murphy also led the way in digs, with 15 apiece. Sherbeyn contributed 12 digs as her own. Miller and Tucker each had four digs, while Wright, Bivens and Schlagel combined for eight.
Tucker led the way in assists, with 18 on the night, followed by Wright’s 14. Garner and Schlagel topped the stat sheet in blocks, with two apiece. Bivens, Murphy and Miller each had one.
The Lady Blazers are on a roll lately, winning their past four games and six of their last seven. Torrington now sits at 10-9 on the season, with a 3-1 record in the quadrant. The Lady Blazers’ next competitive action comes on Friday on the road against Newcastle, with the varsity game set for 6 p.m. They also hit the road for Douglas on Tuesday to take on the Lady Bearcats, starting at 7 p.m.
