Lady Blazers unable to stop rally

CHADRON, Neb. – The Torrington Lady Trailblazers held a 25-18 lead on the road Saturday against Chadron, but saw that lead evaporate, falling 51-36.

The Lady Blazers came out of the gates limiting the Lady Cardinals to five points in the first quarter, while putting up eight of their own. They built on their lead to take their 25-18 lead.

“We started out the game playing some amazing defense,” coach Jeff Halley said. “We caused them piles of turnovers, especially in the first half, but didn’t capitalize on enough of them. A lot of it was first-game jitters, but I felt like our girls played hard and gave us a good base to start from.”

The third quarter proved to be the difference, with Chadron outscoring Torrington 19-8 to take a 37-33 lead. The Cardinals put the pedal to the metal to close out the game, outscoring Torrington 14-3 in the fourth quarter.

“Chadron made some good adjustments to what we were doing at half time and we haven’t had enough time to prepare to many different looks,” Halley said. “That is always a difference playing them first – they have had 20 some practices and played five games and we had 10 practices and this was our first contest. That lack of experience and conditioning on the season got us in the second half.”

The Lady Blazer seniors came out hot in their first game of the year, with all but two points coming from the senior class. Adia Sherbeyn paced Torrington in scoring with nine points, which she paired with three rebounds, an assist and a team-high eight steals. Logan Murphy was the second-leading scorer, with eight points, just behind Sherbeyn’s nine. Murphy also tallied up four steals and a team-high nine rebounds.

Renee Cline chipped in six points, including a three-pointer, along with two rebounds and two steals. Taylor Walsh and Chrissy Lira accounted for five points apiece. The senior duo also combined for six rebounds, an assist and a steal.

Brielle Bivens, the lone non-senior to score, and Brooklyn Tucker rounded out the scoring, combining for three points, three boards, an assist and five steals.

The loss against Chadron puts Torrington at 0-1 on the fresh season. The Lady Blazers return to the floor this weekend for a tournament hosted by Lander.

“I do like what I see out of our team,” Halley said. “I think we will make some great strides this week and put together some good games over in Lander.”
