WORLAND – The Torrington Lady Trailblazers earned revenge over Worland on Saturday after falling to the Lady Outlaws in tournament action earlier this season, picking up the five-set win on the road.
The Lady Blazers struggled coming out of the gate, dropping the first set 25-13. They quickly moved past the loss to come away with a nail biting win, 26-24. Torrington carried that momentum into the third set, winning 25-16. Worland picked up the fourth set, 25-14, forcing a decisive fifth set. The Lady Blazers outlasted the Lady Outlaws, snagging the fifth set, 15-10.
At the service line, Torrington amassed 10 aces, with five coming from Adia Sherbeyn. Brooklyn Tucker kicked in another two, while Katelynn Wright, Logan Murphy and Taylor Walsh added one apiece.
Murphy led the way in the kill department, accounting for 20 on the night. She also topped the list in blocks, with four, and made a significant contribution in the back line, recording 28 digs. Ashley Schlagel was second in kills with seven, which she paired with four digs. Sherbeyn also had six kills, a block and 20 digs.
Walsh had a team-high 30 digs, with Murphy coming in second. Tucker added 21 digs and led the Lady Blazers in assists, with 21. Wright was second in assists, with 12, and she chipped in seven digs and two kills. Brielle Bivens, Nakalyn Garner and Paige Miller combined for six kills, four blocks and 13 digs.
Torrington 3, Wheatland 0
Torrington senior Logan Murphy recorded 14 kills and fellow classmate Adia Sherbeyn poured in eight ace serves to lead the Trailblazer girls to a three-set sweep of the Wheatland Bulldogs (25-11, 25-11, 25-16) Thursday in Wheatland.
Wheatland jumped out to a 5-2 lead following a kill from sophomore Loren Mann, but Torrington responded, scoring the next four points to grab a 6-5 advantage.
After a Trailblazer error, Torrington again reeled off four straight points, including two ace servers from junior Paige Miller, to force Lindsay Schaffner to use an early timeout for Wheatland.
Miller added another ace serve right after the timeout, and following an attack error by the Bulldogs, Sherbeyn added back-to-back kills to push Torrington’s lead to 14-6.
Miller’s 7-point run at serve ended on a service error and after back-to-back points by the Bulldogs, Torrington’s Nakalyn Garner notched one of her five kills on the night to push the Blazers’ lead back to 15-9.
Senior Ashley Schlagel added a kill and teamed up with Miller on a stuff block moments later to extend Torrington’s lead to 19-10 and the Blazers would not look back, taking the first set 25-11.
Sherbeyn got the Blazers off and running in the second set with seven straight points, including two aces. Torrington’s 7-0 run was also highlighted by a pair of kills from Murphy and one from Garner.
Wheatland ended the Blazers’ run with two straight points of their own, but Torrington kept the pressure on. A Torrington kill moments later pushed the Blazers’ lead to 10-4 and later, after three straight errors by the Bulldogs, Torrington extended to a 15-6 advantage. Wheatland managed to cut the deficit to 15-9, but could not overcome the early deficit and Torrington claimed a 2-0 lead in the best of five series.
The third set began much like the second, with Sherbeyn holding serve for the first seven points of the set, including three aces. Moments later, junior Katelynn Wright added an ace serve of her own to push Torrington’s lead to 12-3.
The Blazers led the third set by as many as 13 points and held on for the 25-16 victory and sweep.
Torrington ended the night with 29 kills and eight errors for a .292 hit percentage.
Murphy led all attackers with 14 kills, while Garner and Sherbeyn had five apiece. Miller and Schlagel contributed two kills each and Brielle Bivens had one for Torrington.
Wheatland’s Rachel Battershell finished with five assists, three kills, two blocks and was 8-of-10 from the service line, while Faith Scheller had six digs, four kills, one block and was 3-of-3 on serves. Mann ended with two kiils, Danielle Britz had five digs and was 5-of-5 on serves, and Cali Moody was 9-of-10 from the service line.
Sherbeyn had eight digs and a block to go along with her five kills and eight ace serves, while Brooklyn Tucker had 17 set assists and three digs and Wright had six assists and six digs. Taylor Walsh ended with five digs.
In freshman action Thursday, Torrington captured a two-set victory (25-15, 25-8) and the Trailblazers’ junior varsity also earned a two-set win (25-9, 25-5).
The two wins by the Lady Blazers put them at 9-9 on the season with a 3-1 record in the conference. Torrington played Scottsbluff, Neb. on the road Tuesday after press time. The Lady Blazers return to action on the road Friday against Newcastle, with the varsity game slated for 6 p.m.
