Lady Blazers struggle against Gering, Douglas

TORRINGTON – The Torrington Lady Blazers were handed two losses last week, falling 61-34 to Gering, Neb., on Thursday and Douglas at home Friday, 66-28.
“We had a tough weekend of games,” coach Jeff Halley said. “Hopefully we got better from the experience and will battle them better next time.”

Adia Sherbeyn and Taylor Walsh were the leading scorers for the Lady Blazers on Thursday, with six points each. The pair combined to shoot 5-of-8 from the field, with Sherbeyn addin two points from the free-throw line. They each had a rebound and a steal and Sherbeyn had one of Torrington’s four assists.

Logan Murphy was the top rebounder for Torrington, with 10. She was also second for the Lady Blazers in scoring, with five points. Murphy had an assist and two steals, which was tied for the team-high. Kaelyn Riley and Sydney Hill both had four points on the night. They also combined for four rebounds and Hill had two steals to her credit.
Nine different Lady Blazers scored against Gering. Shelbey Prusia had three points, while Brooklyn Tucker, Renee Cline and Chrissy Lira each added two.
The Lady Blazers shot 48 percent from the floor. Not including the two missed shots from behind the arc, Torrington shot 52 percent. The Lady Blazers were sent to the free-throw line 20 times, knocking down six.

Douglas 66, Torrington 28
“After going to Gering, we knew that Douglas would be an even bigger test,” Halley said. “They are No. 1 and undefeated. I was really proud of how our girls came out early. We played toe to toe with them for the first quarter, but we are still learning how to play with that level of intensity for a full 32 minutes.”
Murphy was top-scorer for Torrington, with 11 points. She shot 3-of-8 from the field and 5-of-8 from the charity stripe. The Lady Blazer also added four rebounds, an assist and four steals, the team high.
Outside of Murphy, Hill was the only other player with more than four points for Torrington. She had five points and three rebounds. Riley was the team leader in boards, with seven.
Walsh (3), Tucker (2), Prusia (2), Lira (2), Riley (2) and Sherbeyn (1) all scored for Torrington on Friday. Eight different girls put up a shot, with the team knocking down 28 percent of their attempts from inside the arc. At the charity stripe, the Lady Blazers hit 12-of-21.
