Lady Blazers snag close road win

NEWCASTLE – The Torrington Lady Trailblazers soccer team snapped its five-game losing streak Tuesday with a 4-3 victory on the road against Newcastle.
“We simply capitalized on opportunities we’ve had all year,” coach Travis Rapp said. “We could have scored three or four more if we pull the trigger a little faster.”
Merissa Hitt got the scoring going early for the Lady Blazers with an unassisted goal. Jordan Hunt followed up Hitt’s goal with a goal of her own, with the assist coming from Miranda Aguayo. The third goal came from Shelby Schainost on a free kick. Hitt was not done for the night, as she netted her second and Torrington’s fourth goal on the night.

Although the Lady Blazers racked up four goals, Newcastle kept and close and pushed Torrington to the limit.
“The girls had to hold on and play the full 80 minutes,” Rapp said. “Newcastle did not go down easily – they wanted the win just as much as we did. We held on and our defense and Dani (Masterson) came up big in the last two minutes of the game.”
Between the pipes, Masterson recorded 12 saves and secured the win for the Lady Blazers.
The road victory puts the Lady Blazers at 2-12, with a 0-2 record in the conference. Their regular season closes out with games against two conference foes. Torrington played Lander on the road on Thursday after the press deadline. The Lady Blazers close out the regular season on the road against Rawlins at 11 a.m. Saturday.
“It can be the beginning (of a winning streak),” Rapp said. “The girls deserve some success for all the hard work they’ve put in. We will go do our best and see where we stand Saturday afternoon.”
