MITCHELL, Neb. – The Torrington High School jumped out to a quick lead but had to hold on for a 39-31 victory over the Mitchell Lady Tigers last Thursday.

The visiting Lady Blazers raced out to a 12-2 lead, taking a 12-5 lead into the second quarter.

In the second quarter, Mitchell battled back tying the game at 17 apiece heading into the locker room.

In the third quarter, Torrington outscored Mitchell 13-5, pushing the lead to eight at 30-22 heading into the fourth quarter.

Mitchell wasn’t able to cut into the eight-point deficit over the final quarter as both teams added nine more points.

“We worked hard in a game that Mitchell tried to make as ugly as possible,” first-year coach Chris Strampe said. “We led for most of the game and played well enough down the stretch to put it away. I was proud of the mental toughness and perseverance our girls had.”

Sophomore Olive Osmera led the team with 12 points, while senior Marissa Moorehouse added 11. Sophomore Jaycee Hurley had seven points to go along with four assists and four steals. Sophomore Teryn Stokes led the team with 13 rebounds, adding two points.

The Lady Blazers open 3A Southeast Quadrant play this weekend when they travel to Wheatland for a 5:30 p.m. contest Friday, Jan. 20 before returning home to face Douglas on Saturday, Jan. 21 at 3 p.m.

“Looking forward to starting up conference play in the next week,” Strampe said.
