TORRINGTON – Despite two more losses, the Torrington High School girls’ soccer team took a big step forward last week.
A little more than a minute into last Tuesday’s contest with Scottsbluff, Nebraska, Elle Tapia netted the Lady Blazers’ first goal of the season. The goal came after the teams waited out an hour and a half lightning delay.
Unfortunately for the Lady Blazers, the lead didn’t last long.
In the fourth minute, the visiting Lady Bearcats scored the first of nine goals, handing Torrington a 9-2 loss.
Scottsbluff scored seven straight goals for the Lady Blazers netted their second goal in the final seconds before halftime. The goal came courtesy of Jade Brothwell on a penalty kick.
In the second half, Scottsbluff got two quick goals coming out of the locker room.
On Thursday, the Lady Blazers returned to 3A East Conference play with a 6-1 loss to the Newcastle Lady Dogies.
It was back-and-forth early. Both teams took shot attempts, but it was Newcastle to get the first goal in the back of the net in the 14th minute.
It was the first of three goals in the first half by the Lady Dogies. Newcastle scored one more in the 49th minute before a penalty kick by Brothwell.
Newcastle capped off the match with two more goals.
The Lady Blazers fall to 0-6 on the season and 0-4 in conference play. Torrington is back in action Friday at Douglas (5-1) before returning home to face Worland (6-2-1) on Saturday. Friday’s action is scheduled for 3 p.m., and on Saturday, kickoff is scheduled for noon.
