TORRINGTON – The Torrington High School girls’ soccer team dropped a pair of matches over the weekend to Newcastle and Buffalo.

On Thursday, the team made the trip north to Newcastle and came away with a 4-0 loss.

Despite the lack of offense, Dave Cummings was pleased with how the defense had improved.

“We couldn’t get much offense going, but our defense really stepped up,” he said. “The first time we played them it was 7-0, so we made an improvement on defense. They played very solidly. The goals they gave up in the game, Newcastle earned the goals.”

On Saturday, the Lady Blazers returned home for one final home game this season against the Buffalo Lady Bison.

The visitors jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first 15 minutes, but senior Elle Tapia wasn’t going to go away quietly.

She scored a pair of goals in the span of three minutes, cutting the Buffalo lead in half.

The second goal came courtesy of an assist from fellow senior Jade Brothwell.

“Ellie Tapia and Jade getting the assist on her second goal was fantastic,” Cummings said. “I like getting the seniors some performance for their last home match. Those girls have been a pleasure coaching them. I only had them for three years because they were freshmen the COVID year. I look forward to seeing what they do in the future.”

The 4-2 deficit proved to be as close as Torrington came the remainder of the game.

Buffalo added a fifth goal with five minutes remaining in the half.

It was the start of six unanswered goals by the Lady Bison, as Buffalo netted five more goals in the second half.

The two losses drop the Lady Blazers to 0-11 on the season and 0-9 in the 3A East Conference. They wrap up the season at Rawlins on Thursday, May 11. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.

“It will be their final exam,” Cummings said. “We’ve played very well against Rawlins this past week, and we hope to take that next step and see these girls finish the season with a win.”
