L-FL track packs in two invites

BURNS – The Lingle-Fort Laramie track teams had back-to-back invitationals last week, competing in Wheatland on Wednesday and Burns on Thursday, with both the girls and boys finishing fifth in Wheatland and the boys taking sixth in Burns and the Lady Doggers finishing eighth.

“We scheduled two meets in a row, in an effort to simulate what our athletes will be dealing with at regionals and state,” coach Mike Lashley said. “Participating in a multi-day meet is considerably different than what these kids are used to in a typical one-day format.”

Wheatland Invitational

The Lady Doggers excelled in the field events in Wheatland. Shelby Heilbrun picked up the lone first-place finish for the L-FL girls, clearing 4 feet, 9 inches in the high jump. Jordyn Gaspers got over 4 feet, 7 inches to snag second, while Kalli Nichol finished fourth after clearing 4 feet, 5 inches. Gaspers also took second in the triple jump with a 29-foot, 5.25-inch effort.

In the throwing events, Savannah Mirich picked up two silvers. She had a throw of 31 feet, 5 inches in the shot put and 81 feet, 5.25 inches in the discus, both of which were second-place efforts.

L-FL had a solid day on the track as well. Cora Frederick picked up third-place finishes in both the 1600-meter run (6:45.63) and 3200 (15:46.09). Jenny Manus finished fourth in both of those events as well, finishing the mile in 7:03.64 and turning in a time of 16:22.47 in the two-mile.

Heilbrun carried her solid finish in the high jump on to the track, snagging a fifth-place finish in the 200, clocking a time of 30.86 seconds. L-FL’s 400-meter relay team also finished fourth with a time of 1:00.26.

The Lady Doggers finished fifth as a team, racking up 77.5 points. Glenrock snagged first in the team race with 131 points, while Hanna-Elk Mountain’s 96 points barely edged Wheatland’s 95.5 points for second place.

On the boys side, L-FL had two first-place finishers. Cole Shepardson won the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 43.76 seconds. Rhett Greenwald was not far behind with a time of 50.09 seconds, earning fourth. In the 110-meter hurdles, Greenwald’s time of 18.27 seconds earned him fourth. He was also the other gold-medalist for the Doggers, clearing 9 feet in the pole vault to take first.

Hayden Hill had the best finish in the field events behind Greenwald. In the long jump, the senior cleared 18 feet, 2.5 inches to take third. Cordell Forkner rounded out the field competitors to place, snagging seventh in the discus with a throw of 98 feet, 2 inches.

On the track, Landen Fuller had the best individual finish, taking fifth in the 100 with a time of 12.18 seconds. Gaven Niles also placed individually, clocking a time of 26.35 seconds in the 200 to finish eighth.

The Doggers placed in all three relays, highlighted by a second-place finish by L-FL’s 3200-meter relay squad with a time of 10:37.85. The Doggers also took third in both the 400-meter relay (49.55 seconds) and 1600-meter relay (3:50.76).

The L-FL boys amassed 63 points to take home a fifth-place finish in the team standings. Glenrock had the top spot with 152 points, while Wheatland (121) and Hanna-Elk Mountain (98) rounded out the top-three teams.

Burns Invitational

Fuller carried his solid week into Thursday’s action into Burns. He picked up the top spot in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.89 seconds, while snagging second in the 100 (11.45 seconds).

Also on the track, Kelly Peterson finished fourth in the 1600 with a time of 5:30.79. Greenwald’s time of 17.80 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles put him in the sixth-place slot.

Shepardson, Niles, Greenwald and Fuller linked up for the 1600-meter relay in Burns, with the foursome finishing second with a time of 3:45.81. Shepardson and Niles were joined by Hill and Peterson for the 1600-meter sprint medley, clocking a time of 4:02.33 to finish third.

Hill was the lone Dogger boy to place in a field event, clearing 17 feet, 8 inches in the long jump to secure sixth.

In the boys team race, L-FL racked up 43 points to finish sixth. Gering, Neb. took the top spot with 190.5 team points. Both Pine Bluffs (118) and Burns (108.75) passed the century mark in team points, finishing second and third.

For the Lady Doggers, Kaylan Maez had the best individual finish, taking fourth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 18.65 seconds.

Maez was also on two relay teams that placed for the L-FL girls. In the 400-meter relay, Maez, Heilbrun, Gaspers and Nichol finished in 59.40 seconds, finishing fourth. The Lady Doggers placed fourth in the 1600-meter sprint medley as well, with Heilbrun, Gaspers, Maez and Frederick finishing in 5:17.63.

Mirich was the only Lady Dogger to place in a field event, finishing fifth in the shot put with a throw of 31 feet, 10 inches.

The Lady Doggers picked up 19 points in the team standings to finish eighth, just behind Banner County’s 23 points. Gering took the top spot with 185.75 points, followed by Burns, with 140.75 points, and Pine Bluffs, with 122.5 points, rounding out the top-three.

“Since we had meets on back-to-back days, we split up the events for all of our athletes,” Lashley said. “Most of them participated in about one-and-a-half meets worth of events over the two days. Because of this, our team scores suffered a bit due to limited entries.”

The Doggers return to action for the Pine Bluffs Invitational on Friday.

“Due to various school events over the next two weeks, we will not have our entire team together until the SEWAC conference meet on May 5,” Lashley said. “In the meantime, we will continue to improve in every area, with the hope that we can make some noise at regionals and state.”
