LINGLE – The Lingle-Fort Laramie Lady Doggers hosted the L-FL Invite Friday in Lingle, besting all three 1A opponents and one 2A opponent they faced, while falling to 2A’s Sundance.
“We saw three 1A teams and were able to defeat them. That gives us an idea of how things look on this side of the state in the 1A conference,” coach Barb Clark said. “After the day, we were well aware of things we need to concentrate on in practice for the next couple of days.”
L-FL 2, Midwest 0
To open the day, the Lady Doggers handled business against Midwest, winning both sets by a score of 25-7.
Serving proved to be L-FL’s strength against the Lady Oilers. Paige Forkner recorded 18 good serves, with eight of them being aces. Jordyn Gaspers added four aces and Amanda Riley kicked in another two.
“The first game against Midwest, Paige Forkner put on a serving clinic – serving 18 times with eight aces and no errors,” Clark said. “She did a great job of moving the ball around the court. Jordyn Gaspers also served well with four aces on 12 attempts and only one error.”
Riley carried her success to the net, recording seven kills on 12 attempts. Sierra Spears and Jade Cooper each added three kills for L-FL. Cooper led the Lady Doggers in both assists (eight) and digs (four). Riley and Jordan Hunt had three digs apiece.
Sundance 2, L-FL 0
The Lady Doggers’ first loss of the season came in their second game at the L-FL Invite. Sundance put together two solid sets, downing the Lady Doggers, 25-11 and 25-12.
“Sundance is probably one of the best teams we will see this year,” Clark said. “They had very good hitters and passed very well, so they stayed in system most of the game. We didn’t pass well and weren’t able to get much of an offense going.”
At the service line, L-FL had an 88 percent serving percentage, including one ace from Spears. Cooper led the team in kills, with three of the team’s eight, and assists, with six of the team’s seven. Gaspers and Forkner kicked in another two kills each.
L-FL 2, Kaycee 0
With the day rolling on, the Lady Doggers got back to their winning ways, besting Kaycee in two sets, 25-9 and 25-20.
Riley again led the team in kills, with nine. Gaspers chipped in three and Hunt and Forkner each had two. Forkner also tied Cooper for the lead in aces, with two apiece. Hunt paced L-FL in two blocks. Cooper led the team in assists for the third game, with 12, adding nine to her stat line. Riley contributed 14 digs in the win.
L-FL 2, Upton 1
L-FL was forced to a third set against Upton, but they still came out on top. They won the first set, 25-21, before dropping the second, 25-13. To seal the win, the Lady Doggers recorded a 15-10 set-win.
“We struggled in the second set and were forced to go three sets,” Clark said. “I’m not sure what happened the second set, but we didn’t perform well. Thankfully, we were able to turn things around the third set and get the win.”
Cooper had a big game, racking up all 23 of L-FL’s set assists, paired with 14 digs. Riley paced the team in kills (10), digs (15) and blocks (three). Spears also added two blocks. Gaspers was second for the Lady Doggers in kills, with six.
Forkner again had a solid day at the service line, accounting for four aces. Cooper added two aces for L-FL.
L-FL 2, Hulett 0
Nine girls got onto the court for the Lady Doggers in their final game of the day, with L-FL picking up the win over Hulett, 25-16 and 25-12.
Gaspers, Cooper and Kalli Nichol all had three aces apiece in the win. As a team, L-FL had a 94 percent success rate at the service line.
Cooper led the Lady Doggers in assists, with 16, which she paired with eight assists and two kills. Forkner led the way in kills, with six. Seven different Lady Doggers had a kill in the win. Riley recorded 11 digs to lead L-FL.
After starting the season 4-1, L-FL hosted cross-county rival Southeast on Tuesday after press time. They return to their home court Thursday for action against Burns, with the varsity game set for 6:30 p.m.
