LINGLE – The Lingle-Fort Laramie High School girls’ basketball team split a home doubleheader with Glenrock and Pine Bluffs over the weekend.
On Friday, the Lady Doggers overcame a 10-point deficit in the third quarter for a 41-38 victory.
“We couldn’t get much of a flow going on,” L-FL coach Matt Cornelius said. “I’ve got to give the girls credit; it shows a lot about their character. They kept battling, fighting and chipping away at the lead.”
The Lady Doggers battled back and tied the game with a minute remaining, and it was senior Ashley Riley who put her team in front for good by three from the free-throw line.
“Then we had a big defensive stand to get a big conference SEWAC win,” Cornelius said.
Riley led the Lady Doggers with 19 points, while senior Kelcie Sargent and sophomore Tiah Meyer had six apiece.
“The girls weren’t excited about how our offense looked, but on the other hand, we were excited about getting out with a win,” Cornelius said.
The next day, L-FL had their hands full with the much larger Pine Bluffs Lady Hornets.
The Lady Doggers fell behind 12-11 in the first six minutes of the game before senior Jessy White knocked home the team’s first field goal.
“We were overmatched in the height department,” Cornelius said. “We battled strong and fought throughout the entire game.”
The Hornet lead reached 30 by the end of the third quarter after Pine Bluffs outscored Lingle, 20-5.
“Pine is a different level of a team, and they will probably have a solid postseason run in 2A,” Cornelius said. “We got out of it without any injuries and our attitudes are great.”
Riley led the Lady Doggers with 10 points, while Sargent, Meyer and White added five apiece.
L-FL returns home this week to face another 2A foe in Niobrara County at 5:30 p.m. Friday.
