LINGLE – The Lingle-Fort Laramie Doggers kept close with Midwest during the first half on Friday for Homecoming, but could not gain any traction in the second half, falling 47-11.
It was a stalemate for much of the first quarter, with a five-yard touchdown run by the Oilers as the only scoring, putting the visitors up 6-0. Other than the touchdown, the six combined drives ended in four punts, an interception and a turnover on downs.
Midwest picked up the action in the second quarter, scoring on runs of 23 and 30 yards to take an 18-0 lead into intermission.
After forcing a three-and-out on the Oilers first possession of the second half, L-FL got pinned on their own three and a bad snap resulted in a safety, giving Midwest a 20-0 lead and the ball. The visitors marched down the field and scored on a two-yard run and scored again on their next two possessions, racking up a 40-0 lead after three quarters.
Ty Mueller capped off a six-play, 55-yard drive with a 13-yard touchdown run early in the fourth, giving L-FL its first points of the game. That drive was highlighted by a 34-yard reception by Hayden Hill. On the Doggers next possession, they took the ball 48 yards and got a field goal off the boot of Brandon Hill. Midwest punched in another score on a 50-yard gallop, ending the scoring at 47-11.
Cordell Forkner took a majority of offensive snaps at quarterback, going 6-of-23 for 103 yards and an interception. He found four different receivers in the loss. Hayden Hill hauled in one pass for 51 yards, while Brandon Hill had three receptions for 25 yards and Mueller had one reception for 30 yards.
In the running game, Alex Pugsley racked up 38 yards on four carries. Mueller amassed 15 yards on four carries and had a rushing touchdown.
Mueller also had a big day on the defensive side of the ball, leading the Doggers in solo tackles, with eight. Gaven Niles was a menace in the backfield, totaling five tackles-for-loss, three solo tackles and three assisted tackles. Brandon Hill added five solo tackles, two assisted tackles and a tackle-for loss.
The loss against Midwest puts L-FL at 1-3 on the season, with a 1-2 record in the conference. The Doggers hit the road this week in a conference matchup against Hanna-Elk Mountain. The kickoff is slated for Saturday at 2 p.m.
