SHERIDAN – The Lingle-Fort Laramie Doggers picked up a road win by a wide margin Friday in Sheridan, besting Normative Services Institute 75-7 for their first win of the season.
The scoring got started quickly for L-FL, with Ty Mueller scoring on a 23-yard reception. Hayden Hill took a 55-yard run to the house on the first rushing attempt of the game for the Doggers. Brandon Hill got in on the action, scoring a 33-yard touchdown, followed by a tackle for a safety by Brandon Hill and Zane Rising.
Still in the first half, Hayden Hill found the end zone again on a 37-yard touchdown. In the second quarter, Brandon Hill toted the rock for a one-yard score and Mueller scored on both a reception (43 yards) and a 60-yard interception return. Cordell Forkner also scored on defense, with his touchdown coming on a fumble recovery. Gaven Niles found the end zone on a 33-yard run for the final score of the first half.
“The kids came out excited to play – they were really pumped up to play,” coach Matt Cornelius said. “The kids really changed up the pace of things.”
By intermission, the Doggers built a 68-0 lead. With a running clock in the third, both teams were held scoreless. In the fourth, both teams scored a touchdown, with Hayden Hill finding the end zone for a third time on the night on a 30-yard scamper.
By the end of the night, Hayden Hill and Mueller both found the end zone three times, with Brandon Hill chipping in another two scores. Hayden Hill was the top rusher for L-FL, accounting for 113 yards and three touchdowns on six carries. Niles and Rising were second and third on the rushing leaderboard, accounting for a combined 59 yards on six carries.
Mueller led the way in receptions, accounting for four grabs for 104 yards. Brandon Hill hauled in three catches for 45 yards, while Jaden McDuffie accounted for another reception, going for 14 yards. Forkner went 8-for-10 in the passing game, racking up 163 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions.
“We had some kids do some real neat things on offense and it really up some of our packages because the kids stepped up and did good things,” Cornelius said.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Doggers recovered seven fumbles and came up with two interceptions. Niles accounted for two fumble recoveries, while Forkner had both a pick and a fumble recovery. Cooper Hill, Gage Correa and Jesse Valentine accounted for the other three fumble recoveries.
Rising led the way in tackles, recording three solo tackles and seven assisted tackles. He added a tackle for loss to his stat line. Niles led the way in tackles-for-loss and sacks, with two in each category.
“Gaven Niles did a really great job of breaking up plays in the backfield and that really helped out our linebackers and secondary,” Cornelius said.
In the secondary, Hayden Hill, Brandon Hill and Mueller accounted for six pass breakups.
The win over the Wolves was the first of the year for L-FL, putting their record at 1-2, with a 1-1 record in the conference. They return to their home field Friday to take on Midwest at 7 p.m. for Homecoming.
“Midwest is a good, aggressive and fast team but if we continue to improve, we have a very good shot against them,” Cornelius said. “Every weekend now is almost a playoff game.”
