TORRINGTON – Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Jose Jesse Martinez Sr., 74, at 11:30 a.m. Friday, April 6 at St. Rose Catholic Church with The Rev. Father Ray Moss officiating. Cremation will follow services and burial will be at a later date. A Rosary/Wake service will be held on Thursday at 6 p.m. at the church.

Jose was born Jan. 11, 1944, in Mercedes, Texas, the son of Liandro Martinez and Isabell Castillo. Jose grew up and went to school in Morrill, Neb. On March 7, 1964, Jose married Elfida Hernandez. The couple moved to Torrington in 1970, where he was a farmer and worked at Western Holly Sugar. He retired in 2006 after working at Holly Sugar for 28 years.
He liked boxing and softball and he enjoyed traveling. Jose was also an avid Dallas Cowboys fan.
Survivors include his wife Elfida Martinez of Torrington; sons Liandro and Steven Martinez and Jorge Salaz; daughter San Juanita; brothers Raymond, Abraham and Robert Martinez; sisters Lupe Price and Paula Pena; uncle Soltero Castillo; aunts, Tina Cano, Elodia Ruiz, Romalda Flores, Mana Loya and Victoria Castillo; 26 grandchildren and 48 great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were his parents; brother Domingo; and sons Jose Jr. and Marcos Martinez.
