TORRINGTON – Torrington High School senior Mattie Jones signed her National Letter of Intent to continue her basketball career and education for the Laramie County Community College Lady Golden Eagle team in Cheyenne next season.

Jones was an 3A East All-Conference player helping lead the Lady Blazers to a 15-13 record and the consolation championship game of the 2021-22 Class 3A State Basketball Tournament.

She knew she wanted to play college basketball somewhere because it was her first love, it was just a matter of finding the right spot.

“LCCC was just a good fit for me when I went on a visit there,” Jones said. “I talked to the exercise science program, and it all fit very well.”

Jones was second on the team in scoring, averaging 9.4 points per game and led the team with 3.1 assists per game. Her assist numbers ranked fifth in all of Class 3A. She also tallied a team-high total of 60 steals on the season, averaging 2.4 per game. She also led the team with 33 made 3-pointers.

Jones will follow in the footsteps of her older brother Jackson, who has played for the men’s program the past two seasons. She said he played a role in why she will also play in Cheyenne.

“He’s always said really good things about LCCC, and he’s helped me a lot with my recruiting process,” Jones said. “He’s given me a lot of information, talked to coach and talked to the team. He’s really helped me, and I’m thankful for him.”

Jones was also an accomplished track athlete and volleyball player. On April 26, Jones set a school record in the pole vault, clearing 10 feet, 1 inch at the Best of the West Classic in Scottsbluff, Nebraska.

“It was hard,” Jones said of picking basketball over the other two sports. “I thought about track a little bit, but ultimately, basketball is my love. I knew I had to follow that and my heart. I’ll miss track, volleyball a little, but track for sure.”

Over her four years at THS, Jones scored 533 points, dished out 199 assists and tallied 168 steals. She made three trips to the state tournament, including her freshman, junior and senior seasons.

“It’s just been amazing,” Jones said of her time as a Lady Blazers. “I’ve had a great four years. I’ve loved every minute of it. I’m just so thankful for everything.”

Jones plans to major in exercise science – a new program at LCCC.
