Illness hinders Lady Blazers

BUFFALO – The Torrington Lady Trailblazers were without three varsity players in their regular season finale on the road Friday against Buffalo in a 58-28 loss.

“We were a little short handed in Buffalo,” coach Jeff Halley said. “Sickness has run rampant through our team. We were missing 4-5 kids all week at practice and it showed at the beginning of the game.”

Buffalo rushed out to a 12-0 lead and went up 30-9 by intermission. Torrington managed to cut the lead to 12 points in the third quarter, but Buffalo ran away at the end.

Brielle Bivens paced Torrington with 10 points, which is a season-high for her. She also notched six rebounds. Logan Murphy turned in six points and a team-high nine rebounds and four steals. Adia Sherbeyn matched Murphy in the steal department, with four. The senior filled her stat line with four points, two rebounds and an assist.

Sam Hill turned in five points, three rebounds and a steal. Brooklyn Tucker and Laura Halley rounded out the scoring, combining for three points, two rebounds, an assist and a steal.

“On the bright side, our girls coming off the bench are realizing how much we will need them during the tournament this week,” Halley said. “It might take everyone that sees the floor to contribute to our success and reach our goal of going to state.”

Torrington dropped to 9-11 on the year, but their 4-2 record against quadrant opponents puts the Lady Blazers as a No. 2 seed heading into the 3A East Regional Tournament this weekend in Douglas. Torrington’s first game comes against Worland on Thursday at 8:30 a.m. in Douglas.
