Homesteaders to host Smithsonian exhibit

TORRINGTON – Area residents will have an opportunity to learn about America’s work history when they visit Homesteaders Museum during the next two months. An exhibit on the local history will be featured, as well.

Wednesday morning, 12 trunks from the Smithsonian Museum, carrying panels, photos and other items, were unloaded by city of Torrington personnel, and will be on display in the Baggage Room Jan. 27-March 18.

“We’re really excited to have this display come to Torrington,” said Sarah Chaires, Director of the Homesteaders Museum. “There will be panels, photographs, and audio and video information.”

She said that guided tours may be accessed on individual cellphones, as well.

“The Way We Worked” includes four segments: Where We Work, How We Worked, Who Works, and Why We Work. It answers questions such as who works, and what the impact is on the nation’s economic engine, and its role in our culture.

An introduction to the program states that workers are the backbone of American society, and Americans are known for their strong work ethic. It continues that American jobs are as diverse as the American workforce, from sugar beet fields to skyscrapers.

“We hope everyone takes the opportunity to visit the exhibits,” Chaires said. “The Goshen County exhibit, ‘Trades, Toils, and Tumbleweeds,’ features tools and photographs, and will be in the lobby.”

A Goshen County Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours event and Grand Opening is set for 3-7 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 1, at the Museum on South Main. Jerimiah L. Rieman, Wyoming’s Director of Economic Diversification, Strategy and Initiatives, will be guest speaker.
