TORRINGTON – A few of the signs heralding the holiday season in Goshen County include Santa riding in a fire truck, the smell of processed sugar beets and a beaming young woman in a red cape and hat – known to residents as Miss Merry Christmas.
Every year, members of the Torrington Lions Club interview several applicants, all vying for the title designed to bring a little extra Christmas cheer to
Contenders field questions about their favorite holiday memories, extracurricular activities, plans for the future and more, before one individual is granted the honor of being named the official Miss Merry Christmas.
Last Wednesday evening, Hannah Woster of Torrington received the jolly designation.
“I had almost cried, but I wanted to keep it together – it was hard, but I did,” Woster said of her reaction. “My heart just filled with joy and excitement when they asked me” to serve as Miss Merry Christmas.
The Torrington High School senior was born in Redbluff, Calif., but moved to Goshen County when she was two years old with her mother, Leslie.
After graduation, Woster hopes to attend the University of Wyoming to study law and, eventually, become a lawyer.
For now, her immediate plans focus on the holidays and duties as 2017’s Miss Merry Christmas, which include riding in the Christmas parade with Santa, attending the Lions Club’s Annual Holiday Bazaar, helping at the club’s dinner and gift auction, and simply spreading cheer wherever
Woster said her favorite part about Christmas draws upon childhood memories and seeing children enjoying the holiday.
“My favorite Christmas memory was getting my very first bike and crashing on the ice,” Woster said. “I’m looking forward to the kids. I love kids and all the excitement they bring.”
