TORRINGTON – The May 20 meeting of the Goshen County Historical Society will feature Marcel Kornfeld, professor of anthropology at the University of Wyoming. Kornfeld has conducted research at the internationally known Hell Gap Paleoindian site since the mid-1980s, and was a leader in achieving the National Historic Landmark designation, which was announced Jan. 11.
Kornfeld will review the history of research at the site, which dates back as much as 13,000 years. The site in northwest Goshen County frequently hosts international research teams, in addition to U.S. scholars. Hell Gap is especially important because it was a campsite where daily activities were carried out sporadically over many centuries, while other early sites have usually been short-term. The designation is the result of efforts by Kornfeld, his wife, Dr. Mary Lou Larson, and UW Professor Emeritus George Frison, among others.
