TORRINGTON – University of Wyoming anthropology professor Marcel Kornfeld will be the featured speaker for the next meeting of the Goshen County Historical Society, set for noon May 20 at the VFW Hall in Torrington.
Kornfeld has conducted research at the internationally known Hell Gap Paleoindian site since the mid-1980s, and was a leader in achieving the National Historic Landmark designation, which was announced Jan. 11.
Kornfeld will review the history of research at the site, which dates back as much as 13,000 years. The site in northwest Goshen County frequently hosts international research teams, in addition to U.S. scholars. Hell Gap is especially important because it was a camp site where daily activities were carried out sporadically over many centuries, while other early sites have usually been short-term. The designation is the result of efforts by Kornfeld, his wife, Dr. Mary Lou Larson, and UW Professor Emeritus George Frison, among others.
Kornfeld’s program will include a PowerPoint presentation as well as a display of artifacts related to the site.
The program is free and open to the public. The meeting will be at the VFW Post #2918, and begins with lunch at noon, followed by a short business meeting and the program at 1 p.m. The no-host lunch is $10 per person and is prepared by the VFW Auxiliary. Lunch reservations must be made by noon, Tuesday, May 16, by leaving name and number of meals with society vice president Sandra Hansen at 532-3619. Lunch is optional.
The VFW is at 908 W. 25th Ave., east of the National Guard Armory, and is handicap accessible.
