TORRINGTON – Wednesday evening, Torrington Lions Club members and representatives from KGOS/KERM radio station and the Torrington Telegram gathered to select the 2018 Miss Merry Christmas. The longtime tradition, including hooded cape and glittery sash, will live on in Torrington High School senior Laura Halley this holiday season.

Two THS students – Bailey Walker and Halley – vied for the crown. Following a question-and-answer session and some deliberation, the judges ultimately named Halley the winner – however, expressed admiration for both candidates.

During her interview, Halley, 17, said she loves to play golf and is particularly proud to be part of the 2018 state championship golf team under the leadership of her father, Jeff (her mother is Rachel).

Halley’s other interests include tutoring math, fishing, basketball, violin, canoeing, spending time with friends, cooking, working puzzles, and managing volleyball.

She is a three-year Gold Honor Roll student, earns a 4.0 grade-point average, and is a Distinguished Young Women second runner-up and scholar winner, as well as lettering for four years in golf and basketball.

In the future, Halley plans to attend either Casper College or Laramie County Community College and major in biology, followed by continued education to become an audiologist, optometrist or physician’s assistant.

A Christmas more than a decade ago sticks in Halley’s mind as her favorite holiday memory.

“Every once in awhile, we’d go to my grandparents’ house in Lingle for Christmas … with my cousins from Minnesota,” she said. “As a family, we did a game of hide-and-seek on Christmas Eve.”

She also remembers seeing and idolizing Miss Merry Christmas when she was a young child.

“I saw her when we first moved here,” Halley said. “I thought she was so cool, with her fuzzy, red cape and how she helped with Christmas.

“I will definitely be a role model. I love little kids,” she continued. “I like to goof around with them.”

During her time as titleholder, Halley will make appearances at the annual Lions Club Holiday Bazaar and the Christmas Parade of Lights, along with other seasonal events.

“I would love to be able to serve and support my community, along with being a role model to others around me,” Halley said of her desire to be Miss Merry Christmas, adding she hopes to help make Christmas “magical and special”
for residents.
