TORRINGTON – Gretchen Hughes began a new journey Sept. 21, 2022. 

In September of 1940, in Loveland, Colorado, Clyde and Fern Bauer welcomed their daughter Gretchen Bauer to the family. She grew up working on the family farm, graduating from high school in 1958. She attended college at Colorado State College in Greeley, Colorado. 

In 1962, she received a Bachelor of Arts degree, certified to teach. She began her teaching career in Colorado Springs where she met the love of her life, Robert Hughes. They were married in July of 1965 and were together until his passing in 2009. Gretchen and Bob bought a home and moved to Denver. They welcomed their only daughter, Heidi, the previous year. Gretchen lived in the same home until she relocated to Torrington. 

She loved the Colorado Rockies, Denver Broncos, participating in her grandchildren’s activities, walking, reading and friends she met thru UMW and TUMC. 

She is survived by her daughter, Heidi, and son-in-law, Pastor Jeff Wayland, grandchildren, Andrew and Rachel Wayland, Nicholas Wayland, Michaela and Jonah Segelstein, Daniel Wayland, Benjamin Wayland, and great grandson, Oliver. 

Services will be on Saturday, Oct. 15, 2022, 11 a.m. at Torrington United Methodist Church with Pastor Jeffrey Wayland officiating. Friends and family are invited to her celebration of life followed by a luncheon. A Zoom link will be provided by request, torringtonumc@gmail.com.
