TORRINGTON – Goshen County 4-h’ers brought home several awards, including two championship team titles, from the state 4-H Wool and Meats Judging contests, held April 27 – 28 in Laramie.
Josie Andersen, Jesse Lynn Garson, Anna Schmick and Kaci Schmick earned Champion Senior Wool Judging team. As a result of their win, this four person team has the chance to compete in the National 4-H Wool Judging Contest in Sonora, Texas this June.
In Wool Judging, 60 contestants judged six classes of wool fleeces which included commercial classes, a Targhee breed, Columbia and Merino. The contest also included six sets of questions and a grading line. Individual scores were combined to create team scores. Kaci Schmick earned Reserve Champion Senior Overall while teammate Josie Andersen earned fourth place overall.
Kaci, Anna and Josie earned fourth place in the Placings category. In the Questions, Josie earned second Place and Kaci earned third Place. Kaci earned fourth in the grading line.
The Junior Wool Judging Team was made up of Kodie Andersen, Brett Gara, Lucas Gara and Jami Garson.
Kendall Haas, Anna Schmick and Kaci Schmick earned Champion Senior Meats Judging team. As a result of their accomplishments, the team will compete at the American Royal in Kansas City, Mo., this fall. Meats Judging is coached by 4-H Volunteer Coaches Mike and Mai Lee Olsen.
In Meats Judging, 66 contestants judged six classes including beef carcasses, pork carcasses, pork loins, beef rounds and lamb carcasses. Contestants also completed a retail cut identification line as well as provided oral reasons to defend their placings. Individual scores were combined to create team scores. Anna Schmick earned Champion Overall Individual while Kaci earned third and Kendall brought home seventh. Anna earned fourth place in placings while Kaci earned eighth. Kaci earned the top spot in oral reasons but Anna earned second and Kendall brought home fifth. In the retail cut identification, Anna aced the line and earned a perfect score. Kendall earned fifth.
Other Meats Judgers include Jacob Chapman, Lucas Gara, Jami Garson, Jesse Lynn Garson, Ayden Shimic and Dally Wilkins.
