Lady Blazers knock off Thunder Basin

TORRINGTON – The Torrington High School Lady Blazer tennis team opened the 2019 campaign with a 4-1 victory over the Thunder Basin High School Bolts on Saturday, Aug. 17 in their only match of the day.

“Our girls came out and got a great win against Thunder Basin,” THS coach Curtis Birkley said.

Both single players for the Lady Blazers picked up wins.

No. 1 singles player and junior Sera Glass defeated Alyson Brochers 6-3, 6-3, while Trisha Cates knocked off Alexa Kuhbacker 6-4, 6-0.

In doubles action, the No. 1 team of sophomore Tyne Stokes and freshman Jacee Shields suffered the team’s only set back of the afternoon, falling to Kim Kern and Kinsley Larson 6-3, 6-3.

The No. 2 doubles team of senior Elyssa Cummings and sophomore Bethany Wunibald picked up a 6-3, 6-4 win over Autumn Lund and Ali Morgan.

In the No. 3 doubles match, sophomore Autumn Harris and junior Theona Haines got a 6-4, 6-2 win over Katie Bruse and Maggie Bruce.

Meanwhile the Blazer boys fell twice on Saturday to Thunder Basin and Campbell County, finishing the day winless.

“The boys all did some great things and competed hard,” Birkley said.

Torrington opened the day with a 5-0 loss to the Camels.

Senior and No. 1 singles player Brian Fenn fell to Miles Veyna 6-2, 6-0, while No. 2 singles player sophomore Aidyn Saucedo was defeated 6-1, 6-0 to Tanner Lemm.

In doubles action, the no. 1 doubles team of senior Benjamin Brady and sophomore Isaac Bartlett lost to Jefferson Neary and Austin Robertson 6-0, 6-3, while the No. 2 doubles team of senior Joseph Randolph and sophomore Cody Clayton fell to Jason Fink and Logan Dymond 6-4, 6-3.

The No. 3 doubles team of sophomore Gabe Russell and junior Emanuel Bustamante dropped their match to Tully Allison and Marcus Sarvey 6-1, 6-3.

Later that afternoon, the Blazers also fell 5-0 to the Thunder Basin Bolts.

Fenn was the closest to picking up a victory, falling in a tiebreaker 6-4, 7-6 (8-10) to Jack Voigt in No. 1 singles action.

In No. 2 singles action, Saucedo fell 6-3, 6-1 to Jordan Klaassen, while Brady and Bartlett fell 6-4, 6-1 to Joel Klaassen and Mason Miller.

The No. 2 doubles team Randolph and Clayton fell 6-2, 6-1 to Isaac Lass and Carson Hanson, while the No. 3 doubles team of Russell and Bustamante lost 6-1, 6-1 to Matt Mobley and Luke Lass.

“We all have some things to work on in practice to do better, even me as a coach on how to equip our kids to be ready for matches,” Birkley said.

The Blazers are back in action Thursday, Aug. 22 in Rawlins. Torrington will face the Outlaws and the Cody Broncs, before returning home to face Rock Springs and Green River at noon and 3 p.m., respectively, on Saturday, Aug. 24.
