GOSHEN COUNTY – Brett Gara and Hunter Howe recently won the Autumn Grand American Handicap Championship’s Junior Division in Tucson, Ariz., on Sunday, Nov. 15. This championship was part of the 17th Annual Autumn Grand American competition hosted by the Amateur Trapshooting Association (ATA) at the Tucson Trap and Skeet Club.
The weeklong event held competitions every day and was attended by nearly 500 competitors. This competition was a “Satellite Grand” meaning it was sanctioned by the ATA as a zone competition leading up to the Grand American World Trapshooting Championships held annually in Sparta, Ill.
The 120th Grand American World Trapshooting Championships will be held Aug. 4 through Aug. 14, 2021.
Both Gara and Howe compete in statewide and national competitions but are also members of the Goshen County High School Shooting Team. The Goshen County High School Shooting Team is made up of area school students in sixth through twelfth grade.
The 2020 Wyoming State High School Clay Target Fall League Season Conference began with registration in August. The results from the competition were announced Nov. 18 through Nov. 22.
Gara, Howe and the rest of their team competed in the shoot. Howe scored first place and Gara scored third place in the male division while Makayala Gill scored second place in the female division.
Gill had tied for first, but falling 10 points short in her reserve week dropped her into second place.
Overall, the Goshen County Shooting Sports Team took first place in the conference, beating out Campbell County High School’s team by 261.5 points.
