FORT LARAMIE – The Fort Laramie National Historic Site will be a hub of activity this weekend, surrounding the Great American Eclipse.
After the celestial show ends and the crowds head back to their homes, however, a full week of regularly scheduled events are planned for the whole family.
Sunday, August 20
9:00 am – 7:00 pm Special Event - “All Signs Point to Fort Laramie” – During this special event visitors will encounter many of the characters and stories associated with the rich history of the Fort in a weekend-long living history encampment. The stories shared at this event reflect the diverse cultural identity of the many who have set foot in and around the Fort.
Monday, August 21
8:00 am – 11:00 am Morning Program - “The Great American Eclipse” – Dr. Korey Haynes will break down what’s happening in space when daytime skies go dark. She will explain what scientists learn from eclipses, and tell you what to look for as darkness swallows up our sun. Commissary Bleachers.
11:30 am Special Event – Observation of “The Great American Eclipse” – Join us as the 2017 Great American Eclipse path of totality passes directly over Fort Laramie NHS. The Fort has been the setting of many historic events and this is your chance to become a part of the Fort’s story. Witness this “once in a lifetime” opportunity in a setting that has, and will continue to capture the imagination of generations past, present, and future.
Tuesday, August 22
9:30 am Morning Program - Guided Tour of “Old Fort Laramie” – The epic story of the American West played out on a grand scale at Fort Laramie. Join a ranger and tour the place that became famous in the annals of history. Cavalry Barracks, 90 minutes.
2:30 pm Afternoon Program - “The Post Trader” – Post trader, the richest man at the Fort. The real story of how these men acquired this lucrative monopoly with the U.S Army. Post Trader’s Store, 30 minutes.
3:30 pm Afternoon Program - “The Post Trader” – Post trader, the richest man at the Fort. The real story of how these men acquired this lucrative monopoly with the U.S Army. Post Trader’s Store, 30 minutes.
5:00 pm Evening Program - “Alcohol, Animal, and Arrogance” – The three A’s that started the Indian War on the Plains. Commissary Bleachers, 30 minutes.
