From one adventure to another

Hello everyone. My name is Jensen Jennings, and I’m the newest reporter for the Torrington Telegram, the Lusk Herald and the Lingle Guide.

I recently moved to Torrington after spending the last five years in Florida, Delray Beach to be exact. I graduated from Florida Atlantic University (FAU) in December 2020 with my bachelor’s degree in Multimedia Journalism.

During my time at FAU, I worked at our student newspaper, the University Press, for a year and a half. In my last semester at the paper, I was the Sports Editor and thankfully had the opportunity to cover all of our football games this season, despite the pandemic.

You may be asking yourself, why would someone move from Florida to Wyoming? To answer that, I’d have to explain how I grew up.

I was born In Yuma, Ariz., and moved to Scottsbluff, Neb. when I was six years old. My family only stayed in Scottsbluff for nine months before moving to my mom’s hometown, Waukesha, Wis. I lived in Wisconsin for 10 years before moving to live with my dad in Brawley, Calif. for my junior and senior year of high school.

Growing up, I was always moving around and built friendships with people across the country. Once I graduated high school, I knew that was something I wanted to continue to do.

After I graduated high school in 2009, I joined the United States Air Force and served for six years. In the Air Force, I was a Security Forces member (military police) and was stationed in Wichita Falls, Texas for my entire six years.

A few months before I got out of the Air Force, my best friend from the service asked me if I wanted to move to Florida  and go to school. It was another new adventure, and I figured there were worse places I could live while going to college.

I moved to Florida in December  2015 and started my first semester in the spring of 2016 at Palm Beach State College. I initially wanted to study business and focus on sports management, but I didn’t realize the amount of math it would take to get a business degree.

Shortly before I earned my associate degree and transferred to FAU, I decided to change my major to journalism. My dad is a journalist and works as an editor at a small paper in Illinois. He tried his best to persuade me not to be a journalist. Like I often do, I went against his advice and decided I wanted to be a journalist anyway.

Sports have always been a big part of my life. I figured being a journalist would be the best way for me to work in sports and to tell the stories of athletes and teams to the fans who love sports as much as I do.

College football is my favorite sport, and I’m a big Wisconsin Badgers fan, sorry Nebraska fans. I’m also a fan of the Green Bay Packers, Milwaukee Brewers, Milwaukee Bucks, the Chicago Blackhawks and the Florida Panthers.

I also became a big golfer while living in Florida, albeit not a very good one. I’m excited for the weather to warm up so I can spend a lot of time at Cottonwood at Torrington Golf Course.

When I saw the job listing for the Torrington Telegram, I knew it was a place I would want to be. I’ve always enjoyed being in smaller communities and reading/telling the stories of the people who live in those towns.

I’m excited to be here and look forward to meeting people and becoming a part of this community.

Feel free to email me at jjennings@torringtontelegram.com if you have any story ideas or would just like to talk and have a conversation.
