Four Cyclones earn all-conference honors

YODER – Two Cyclones and two Lady Cyclones earned all-conference honors, highlighted by Emily Buchanan, named to the All-State team for the second straight season.
Buchanan, Southeast girls’ lone senior, was the only Cyclone to reach that level by unanimous selection for the second year in a row. Buchanan led the Lady Cyclone scoring drive in seven straight games in both regional and state tournament play, averaging 17.1 points per game. She also led or tied for the lead in assists over the past seven games.
“Emily has meant a tremendous amount to this team over the past four years,” coach Jennifer Scheer said. “Emily leads more by example. She is a hard-nose player who will never not give you every ounce of effort she has. You cannot replace somebody like that.”
Hailey Anderson joined Buchanan on the 2A Southeast All-Conference team. She was Southeast’s second or third leading scorer in tournament games. Anderson also had a big impact on the boards, averaging 9.1 per game. In the final game of the season, Anderson recorded a double-double, racking up 13 points and 10 rebounds.
“Hailey is a rebounding freak. She has found her niche and it’s rebounding,” Scheer said. “I’m expecting a lot from her over the next two years.”

Scheer also noted the Southeast’s Ellie Schmitt could have easily earned all-conference honors as well.
“Ellie is kind of our motor. She is the glue for that team,” Scheer said. “She means the world to that basketball team.”
On the boys’ side, seniors Chance Werner and Jacob Schmitt earned all-conference distinctions.
“Jacob was a little more vocal but those two showed a little more leadership but all our seniors led this season,” coach Crockett Herring said.
Werner ranked 19th in the east in scoring, racking up 8.9 points per game. His 28.1 percent shooting percentage from behind the arc puts him 14th in the conference. Werner’s five boards per contest is good enough for 19th in the conference.
“Chance was our team leader in a lot of statistics,” Herring said. “He was by far our best defender. He deserved it.”
Schmitt ranked 16th in the conference in offensive rebounds (2.1) and 13th in total boards (5.8). He also earned the sixth spot in the conference in blocks per game, with 0.8.
“Jacob was our inside presence and he really showed that at the regional tournament in those first two games,” Herring said. “He is just a hard working kid.”
