Former Wheatland fire chief indicted on theft charge

WHEATLAND (WNE) — Former Wheatland Volunteer Fire Department Chief, Scott Scheller, was indicted last week on a felony charge of theft.

The State of Wyoming has charged Sheller with mishandling of funds intended for the Wheatland Fire Department Foundation in amounts exceeding $30,000.

Scheller resigned from the department in August 2017, soon after Donald Moede was charged with embezzlement of more than $200,000 from the Platte County Rural Fire District 1F.

Last November, Moede pleaded guilty to eight counts of larceny, and theft. In January, he received his sentence of two to five years in prison, with four to six more years suspended to run concurrently with the prison time and seven years’ probation for embezzling from the fire district. He also paid $236,707.57 in restitution – the full amount he embezzled.

Sheller’s hearing is scheduled for Nov. 27 at 10 a.m. in Wheatland. If convicted, he could face up to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
