Fires continue to burn in Wyoming

Posted

A string of major wildfires across the state have consumed more than 84,000 acres and continue to burn, with approximately 1,800 firefighters actively involved, according to information from the federal all-risk information management system, inciweb.nwcg.gov.

The largest to date is the Roosevelt Fire, which as of Friday morning had burned just more than 54,000 acres in the Bridger-Teton National Forest area south of Jackson.

Currently at 35 percent, firefighters are projecting it will take until Oct. 10 to reach full containment, unless conditions change, according to the website. Continuing dry, windy conditions hamper containment efforts of the 1,155 firefighters involved in battling the blaze. The fire had consumed more than 55 structures according to latest reports.

The Ryan Fire, located south of Encampment in Carbon County, has consumed 21,631 acres. Both the Ryan and Roosevelt fires were first reported Sept. 15.

Containment is projected on the Ryan Fire by Oct. 15. Continued low humidity is contributing to the fire growing, most along the southern edge.

With 81 percent containment reported, the Marten Creek Fire east of Afton has burned 6.477 acres since it was reported Sept. 16. Firefighters on the scene believe there is little chance the fire will spread beyond its current boundaries, with full containment estimated by Nov. 1
