Felony rundown 11/10/17


TORRINGTON – Goshen County Attorney Kenneth Brown has handled several felony cases since August, including possession of controlled substances, battery and sexual abuse.

Below is a rundown of the cases that have hit the court floor recently.

Rachael Cowen, 30, Torrington

Cowen is charged with distribution to a person under 18 and delivering drug paraphernalia to a minor. She was sentenced on Sept. 6 to seven to 10 years in prison for distribution and four to five years for delivering drug paraphernalia, with the sentences to run concurrently (at the same time). The sentences were suspended, and the defendant was placed on 10 years of supervised probation.

Wesley Whitney, 36, Bayard, Neb.

Whitney is charged with sexual abuse of a minor in the third degree. On Sept. 6, he received five to 11 years in the state penitentiary. This sentence was suspended, and Whitney must complete five years of supervised probation.

William Canaday, 30, Sturgis, S.D.

Canaday is charged with two counts of felony possession of a controlled substance – one in plant form and the other in powder or crystalline form. On Oct. 11, he received four to five years in the state penitentiary for both counts, to run concurrently. These sentences were suspended, and Canaday was placed on five years of supervised probation.

Matthew Schmidt, 26, Torrington

Schmidt was sentenced on Oct. 27 for felony possession of a controlled substance. He received four to five years in prison, suspended, with a split sentence of incarceration for one year. After one year of incarceration, Schmidt will begin five years of supervised probation.

Heidi Oshel, 38, Torrington

Oshel is charged with felony possession. She was sentenced Oct. 27 to 21 to 24 months in the Women’s Center, suspended, and placed on a split sentence of incarceration for one year. After one year of incarceration, Oshel will serve two years of supervised probation.

Chad Zube, 36, Torrington

Zube was sentenced on Oct. 27 for felony domestic battery. He received four to five years in the state penitentiary, suspended, with a split sentence of incarceration until Nov. 6. After the incarceration sentence is served, Zube is responsible for five years of supervised probation.

Aaron Scott, 23, Torrington

Scott is charged with the following counts: count II, sexual exploitation of children; count III, sexual exploitation of children; count IV, sexual exploitation of children; count V, sexual abuse of a minor, third degree; and count VI, sexual abuse of a minor, third degree.

On Oct. 27, Scott received 10 to 12 years in the state penitentiary for count II, to run concurrent to counts III, IV, V and VI. For counts III through VI, he was sentenced to 10 to 12 years in prison, to run concurrent to each other, but consecutive to count II. The sentences were suspended, and Scott was placed on 12 years of supervised probation after serving his incarceration sentence for count II.
