Family night returns to library

TORRINGTON— The Goshen County Library hosted a family night on Monday for members of the community to come in and hear stories inspired in  Mexico.

Anita Sanchez, the children’s librarian, gave the families that made it out for the night a special treat, teaching them how to make homemade tortillas before diving into a story about a silly pup that ended up with a sombrero on his head. “Perro con Sombrero,” tells the story one piece at a time translating from English to Spanish as it goes.

While Sanchez was cooking the tortillas, she taught families different words in Spanish that corresponded with what she was making. She explained how the tortillas can be turned into different meals and the difference between the inside and the outside.

“We’re going to eat them plain tonight. Usually at my house we can make eggs and make a breakfast burrito, get cheese and make a quesadilla, get beans and make a burrito,” Sanchez said.

Sanchez said she got very good at making a lot of tortillas in a short amount of time with seven kids to make them for when hers were younger. Sanchez provided all of the guests with her tortilla recipe to take home.

The new Library Director Christine Braddy said she is trying to bring more family oriented events to Goshen County.

“Our goal is to improve literacy, but also introduce different countries around the world using people that are from Goshen County,” Braddy said. “So Anita is introducing Mexico and making tortillas tonight and then our next one we’ll have a student from EWC who is from France. And then there’s a student from Sweden that will be here in April.”
