TORRINGTON – Are your neighbors always coming to you with questions about gardening? Or would you like to learn more about gardening in Wyoming? Do you like to give back to your community? Then maybe becoming a Master Gardener volunteer is for you.
With a history spanning more than 30 years, the Goshen County Master Gardener Club is a great opportunity to gather with like-minded people to learn about gardening, as well as a great way to give back to your community. Volunteer opportunities include planting flowers with 4H Cloverbuds, running the giant pumpkin contest, helping with the Junior Master Gardener program in the schools, community presentations, and much more. Master Gardeners also assist in answering horticulture related questions at the Extension Office, sharing their knowledge across
the county.
For those interested in becoming a Master Gardener, Goshen County Extension will again be offering the Master Gardener volunteer training, beginning in November. The training consists of 40 hours of class time, in a combination of lecture and hands on learning. Graduates from the class, considered interns, will then become certified after completing 40 hours of volunteer service. To remain “active”, members must complete 25 volunteer hours and 10 hours of continuing education annually.
A common “myth” about being a Master Gardener is that you must know everything about everything gardening. Not true. Master Gardeners are trained to find accurate, research based answers which are proven to grow plants and manage plant pests successfully.
The 2017 Goshen County Master Gardener Class will begin on Thursday, November 2nd from 6 pm to 9 pm, continuing through March 29th, at the Goshen County Extension Office. The course will cover basic biology and plant propagation as well as plant disease diagnosis, weed and pest control, tree care, vegetable and turf management, and more. Cost for the class is $200 and includes the class handbook and one soil test. A refund of $100 will be presented upon completion of volunteer hours. Scholarships are available if cost is prohibitive.
