EWC Women’s basketball starts season 2-0

TORRINGTON – The Eastern Wyoming College (EWC) Women’s basketball team defeated North Platte Community College (NPCC) in dominant fashion on Friday night and repeated the performance on Saturday with a win against McCook Community College (MCC).

The Lady Lancers cruised to an 81-64 victory after outscoring NPCC by 13 points in the second half. On Saturday EWC defeated MCC 92-56.

Led by freshman guard Janette Hanni, the Lady Lancers were able to jump out to a quick lead, but NPCC was able to get things all square at 10 after the first quarter of play.

The Lady Lancers and Lady Knights both found their groove on offense in the second quarter, but EWC was able to maintain its lead and went into the half up 32-28.

In the second half the EWC offense caught fire and never looked back. The Lady Knights weren’t able to get within single digits of the Lady Lancers again.

Four different Lady Lancers scored in double figures, led by freshman guard Mara Neira with 19 points on 6-10 shooting from the field including 3-5 from three-point range.

Hanni finished the game with 13 points, nine rebounds and eight assists. Sophmore guard Raleigh Basart scored 18 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the field and 5-of-6 from three. Freshman forward Natalie Kalaydjiev chipped in 11 points off the bench.

NPCC was led by freshman guard Kayla Pope who finished with 17 points on 5-of-12 shooting. Three other Lady Knights scored in double figures on the night.

In Saturday’s win against MCC, Neira once again led the way for the Lady Lancers with a game high 27 points.

The EWC defense locked down MCC in the final three quarters allowing just 14 points in the second quarter and held them to 11 points in the second half.

EWC will be back in action on Saturday, Jan. 30, hosting College of Southern Idaho. Tipoff is scheduled at noon.
