EWC women squeak out one-point win

LAMAR, Colo. – The Eastern Wyoming College Lancers racked up an 11-point advantage after the first frame and held on to take the win on the road Saturday over Lamar Community College, 57-56.
After the first quarter, EWC was up 19-8 over Lamar. The Lady Lancers gave a lot of that lead back in the second quarter, but still held a 31-28 advantage at intermission. EWC added three points to their lead in the third quarter. EWC scored 10 points to Lamar’s 15, but held them off for the one-point margin of victory.
Carna Prokic was the top-scorer for the Lady Lancers, with 16 points. She shot 7-of-17 from the field and accounted for two three-pointers. Prokic chipped in a team-high five boards, four assists and two steals.
Anna Perez Gomez and Sarah Bersang each had 10 points for EWC. The duo combined for seven rebounds, seven assists, seven steals and a block. Bersang, like Prokic and Sophie Claycomb, knocked down two shots from behind the arc. Emily Evans and Pamela Bethel rounded out the starters, racking up five points apiece.
The Lady Lancers shot a better percentage from behind the arc (40) than they did from the field (39). They did struggle from the charity stripe, knocking own 1-of-10. Lamar shot 34 percent from the field, 28 percent from deep and 77 percent from the free-throw line.


EWC 64, NJC 59
In previous season action, the Lady Lancers bested Northeastern Junior College on the road Friday, 64-59.
EWC got out to another hot start, taking a 20-10 lead after the first quarter. At the break, the Lady Lancers were up 34-26. Northeastern trimmed that advantage to five after the third quarter and both teams put up 20 in the final quarter.
Prokic was again the leading scoring, accounting for 16 points. She added eight rebounds, an assist and a team-high four steals.
Bersang, with 13 points, Evans, with 12, and Gomez, with 11, rounded out the top-scorers for the Lady Lancers. Evans also had eight rebounds and a team-high six assists. Bersang and Gomez combined for eight rebounds, four assists and four steals. Bethel contributed eight points and a team-high 12 rebounds on Friday.
The Lady Lancers shot worse from the floor Friday (35 percent) and they knocked down only two three-pointers. They were sent to the free-throw line for 26 attempts, knocking down 14.
The two wins put the Lady Lancers at 19-10 this winter, with only one game remaining in the regular season. Their final action before the tournament comes at home against Western Nebraska Community College Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
