EWC WBB split weekend games

ROCK SPRINGS – The Eastern Wyoming College Lady Lancers competed at the Western Wyoming Community College Tournament in Rock Springs over the weekend, beating Northwest College but falling to Salt Lake Community College.

The Lady Lancers fell behind early against Northwest, facing a 32-19 deficit after the first quarter. EWC erupted for 30 points in the second, while holding Northwest to seven points, giving EWC a 49-39 lead at intermission.

Coming back to the court, the Lady Lancers poured in 24 points in the third quarter and 18 in the final frame, while holding Northwest to 22 and 19.

Lauren O’Connell and Nicole Cutler tied for the team-lead in scoring with 16 points apiece. They both shot 6-of-11 from the floor, while O’Connell knocked down two three-pointers and Cutler went 4-of-6 from the charity stripe. Cutler finished the game with six boards, while O’Connell rounded out her stat sheet with three rebounds and four assists.

Pamela Bethel turned in a double-double, racking up 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting and 12 rebounds. She also had an assist, a steal and a block.

Ines Salat Margarit rounded out the top scorers for EWC, pouring in 12 points, five of which came from the free-throw line. She also chipped in six boards, three assists and a steal off the bench. Cathlyn Knutson, with nine points, and Emily Buchanan, with six points, also made big contributions off the bench. The two, along with Morning Gambler, also combined for four boards, an assist, three steals and a block.

Rounding out the starters, Abril Rexach Roure and Macie Mackey combined for 14 points. Mackey went perfect from the floor (4-of-4) for eight points, while finishing with five rebounds, two assists and a team-high three steals. Roure turned in two boards, four assists and a steal.

The Lady Lancers took on Salt Lake Community College on Friday in Rock Springs and kept things close after the first 10 minutes of action, trailing 18-14 after the first frame. By halftime though, EWC faced a 44-24 deficit. Salt Lake continued to build on their lead in the third quarter, outscoring the Lady Lancers 24-16. EWC picked up a little of the slack in the fourth, going +3 in the scoring margin, but the Lady Lancers eventually fell 82-57.

Knutson and O’Connell topped the scoring column for EWC, accounting for 11 points apiece. Knutson turned in nine points from behind the arc, while most of O’Connell’s points came from inside the arc. O’Connell shot 5-of-8 from the floor.

Cutler was the final Lady Lancer in double-digits, accounting for 10 points on 5-of-10 shooting. She added four rebounds, three on offense, to her stat line. Bethel was a machine on the boards, coming up with 10 rebounds to go along with her four points. Mackey and Roure, the final starters, combined for six points, five boards, four assists and two steals.

Coming off the bench, Gambler and Buchanan both had five points. Buchanan also had three rebounds in the loss. Also coming off of the bench, Margarit and Ijeoma Ezikeolisa combined for five points, three rebounds, six assists and a steal.

The 1-1 record over the weekend puts EWC at 1-2 on the young season. The Lady Lancers hit the floor again for the Northwest Tournament this weekend in Powell.
