The Eastern Wyoming College Lady Lancers defended their home floor Friday in a four-set win over Central Wyoming College on Homecoming.

The Lady Lancers got off to a slow start, falling in the first set 25-16. They managed to rally to win the second set, 25-19. In the third, EWC was pushed to their limits, but picked up the win in extra points, 28-26. The home team rode that momentum in the fourth set, picking up the 25-11 win.

The Lady Lancers had a solid game at the service line, with Alex Simmerman racking up four aces. Helena Khouri added three and Kylee Tresch chipped in an ace of her own. Tresch also led the way in assists, with 22, while Simmerman recorded 17 in the win.

Khouri’s defensive play topped the stat sheet, recording 28 digs on the night, followed by Simmerman, who had 12. Precious Williams (11) and Dawson Sharman (10) were third and fourth on the team in digs. Sharman also had a presence at the net, accounting for eight kills and a block.

Lissette Lefforge led the way in both the kill department, with 12, and the block department, with three. Katie Strohschein was second for EWC in kills, with 10. Behind Lefforge in blocks, Kodi Edwards, Shaniah Freeseman and Giovanna Jordao each had two.

WWCC 3, EWC 2

On Saturday at home, the Lady Lancers traded the first four sets with the Western Wyoming Community College Lady Mustangs, but failed to do enough in the fifth to pick up the win, falling 3-2.

In the first set, EWC had a wire-to-wire win. They rushed out to a 10-4 lead and continued to cling to that lead despite several rally attempts by the visitors. The Lady Lancers’ biggest lead came on the final point of the set, giving them the 25-16 win.

The Lady Mustangs got things together to start the second. The teams traded points until WWCC took a 7-5 lead. EWC trimmed their deficit to one point three times but they could never string enough points together to get the win, falling 25-19.

With the sets at one apiece, it was EWC’s turn to distance itself from WWCC after a back-and-forth opening. After being tied at four, the Lady Lancers picked up a seven-point lead at 15-8 and 23-16. The Lady Mustangs spurred on a rallying effort, trimming the Lady Lancer lead to two (24-22), but the home team closed the door with a 25-22 win.

The two teams traded several points in the beginning of the fourth set, putting the game tied at 10. The visitors then started to pile on the points, taking a seven-point lead and not looking back to win the set, 25-18. In the fifth set, the Lady Mustangs had the wire-to-wire win. The closest EWC got to a lead was when the action as tied at four, but WWCC picked up the pace and snagged the win, 15-10.

Strohschein again had a solid game at the net, recording 13 kills. Lefforge and Sharman also kicked in 10 apiece. Lefforge added three blocks to her stat line. Edwards also had three blocks, with Freeseman and Jordao each chipped in two.

In the back line, Khouri paced the Lady Lancers, carding 22 digs, followed by Simmerman and Sharman, who each had 11. Khouri had an ace in the loss, while Tresch added three. Tresch (21) and Simmerman (18) were again the top two assisters Saturday.

The 1-1 record over the weekend puts the Lady Lancers at 3-19, with a 1-9 record in the region and a 1-3 record in the division. EWC returned to the court Tuesday against Laramie Community College after press time. Its next competitive action comes at home against Miles City Community College on Friday (7 p.m.) and Northwest College on Saturday (3 p.m.).
