EWC snags fourth-straight

SHERIDAN – Eastern Wyoming College outscored their two opponents by a combined 48 points in a tournament in Sheridan over the weekend, allowing the Lady Lancers to secure their third and fourth wins in a row.

The Lady Lancers closed out the weekend with a 16-point win over Rocky Mountain’s JV team. EWC came out of the gates putting up 16 points in the first quarter compared to Rocky Mountain’s 14. By halftime, the Lady Lancers held a 32-27 lead.

EWC upped its scoring in the third and fourth quarters with 24 and 20 points, respectively, while allowing Rocky Mountain only 33 points in the second half. The Lady Lancers closed out the 76-60 win.

Ines Salat Margarit paced the Lady Lancers in the scoring department, pouring in 24 points in the win. She shot 9-of-16 from the floor, including 5-of-8 from behind the arc, while rounding out her stat sheet with five rebounds, four assists and a team-high three steals.

Lauren O’Connell was second on the team in scoring, coming off the bench to contribute 16 points on 6-of-11 shooting. She had four rebounds, all of which were offensive, and three assists. Pamela Bethel rounded out the scorers in double-figures, finishing the night with 14 points and 13 rebounds for another double-double on the season, along with an assist, a steal and two blocks.

Abril Rexach Roure was fourth in scoring, accounting for eight points, while accounting for two steals, a rebound and a team-high six assists. Morning Gambler, Cathlyn Knutson and Emily Buchanan chipped in four points apiece. The trio combined for five rebounds and two steals off the bench.

Along with Bethel, Rexach and Margarit, Macie Mackey and Nicole Cutler rounded out the starting five. Mackey and Cutler combined for two points, eight boards, six assists and two steals.

EWC 68, Williston State 36

A day after Thanksgiving, the Lady Lancers kept Williston State College’s scoring to a minimum. After the first, EWC was up 16-10, expanding that lead to 33-19 by halftime. The third quarter proved to be a major factor in the outcome, with the Lady Lancers outscoring the Lady Tetons 25-11 in the frame. EWC cruised on to a 68-36 win.

Rexach topped the scoring charts for the Lady Lancers with 23 points to her credit, with Margarit close behind, chipping in 21 points of her own. Margarit also led the team in assists and steals, with four in each category, while Rexach contributed three assists and three steals. The duo also had six rebounds.

Bethel was again a force in the post, notching another double-double with 12 points and 14 boards, along with an assist and two blocks. Fellow starters Mackey and Cutler combined for four points, five rebounds, four assists, a steal and two blocks.

Off the bench, Buchanan and Knutson each had four points, while also combining for four rebounds, three assists and a steal. Gambler, Kaylynn Jefferson and Kelliann Raff also combined for five boards and an assist.

The four wins in a row put the Lady Lancers at 6-4 after the first month of the season. Returning to the floor in December, EWC heads for Riverton to compete in a tournament hosted by Central Wyoming College. The Lady Lancers kick off the tournament Friday against Western Wyoming Community College at 5 p.m. and return to action Saturday against host Central Wyoming College at 2 p.m.
