TORRINGTON – The Eastern Wyoming College women’s basketball team used a 9-0 first-quarter run to pull away from the Williston State (N.D.) Tetons on Friday, Nov. 22 as part of the Western Nebraska Community College Tournament in an 82-55 win.

Williston grabbed an early 7-4 lead, but freshman Ane Esnal Aguirre tallied a steal and layup resulting in two points and a timeout by the Tetons.

Coming out of the timeout, the Lady Lancers came out showing a full-court press. Aguirre recorded another steal and layup to give EWC its first lead of the game.

Those four points came in the midst of a 9-0 run, propelling the Lady Lancers to a 13-7 lead.

EWC pushed its lead to as many as 14 at the end of the first quarter, but in the second quarter, Williston chipped away at the deficit.

The Tetons held the Lancers scoreless from the 6:02 mark until 1:08 remained in the opening half.

During that time frame, Williston State cut the Eastern Wyoming lead to as few as six.

Coming out of the half, EWC didn’t waste any time pushing its lead back to double-digits. A layup from sophomore forward Paula Martinez-Sanz gave her team a 39-28 advantage.

The lead only grew from there for the remainder of the game.

Midway through the fourth quarter, the Lady Lancers held their largest lead of the game at 74-45.

For the game, EWC shot 43.3 percent for the game, including 58.1 percent in the second half.

Aguirre led all scorers with 20 points, while Martinez-Sanz added 12. Freshman Montse Gutierrez-Ibanez tossed in 11, while freshmen Emma Strom and Mariana Zanelatto-Minotto had nine each.

The Lady Lancers (4-3) travel to the Salt Lake Community College Tournament Friday and Saturday, Nov. 29-30. EWC will face Salt Lake at 5 p.m. Friday and Utah State Eastern at 1 p.m. Saturday.
