EWC opens season 3-1

GARDEN CITY, Kan. – The Eastern Wyoming College volleyball team opened the 2023 season with a trip to the Garden City Community College’s Scooter’s Coffee Invite.

The Lady Lancers begin the season with a 3-1 record. The three wins matched the entire win total from 2022.

The only setback was in the opening match in a 3-1 loss to tournament host Garden City.

GCCC picked up 25-19, 25-17 wins, but in the third set, the Lady Lancers prevented the sweep with a 26-24 win. Garden City secured the win in the fourth set with a 25-13 win.

Later Friday, Eastern Wyoming defeated Trinidad State College, 3-2.

The teams traded wins in the first four sets. TSC won the first set 25-19, but the Lady Lancers won the second set 25-20. Trinidad won the third 26-24, but EWC forced a fifth set with a 25-19 win. In the final set, Eastern Wyoming pulled out a 15-13 win.

On Saturday, EWC picked up a 3-1 win over Cisco (Texas) College. The Lady Lancers fell in the first set 25-19, but Eastern Wyoming rattled off three straight set wins 25-21, 25-20 and 25-17 for the team’s second win of the season.

In the final game of the tournament, Eastern Wyoming defeated Allen County (Kansas) Community College, 3-2.

Much like the Trinidad match, the teams traded set wins. Allen County won the first set 25-21 before the Lady Lancers won the second set 25-15. The Red Devils won the third set 27-25, but EWC returned the favor with a 27-25 win in the fourth to force a fifth set. In the final set, Eastern Wyoming won 15-10.

The Lady Lancers (3-1) return to action for three consecutive days in Colorado, beginning on Thursday, Aug. 24. They play Otero Junior College at 6 p.m. Thursday before facing Lamar (Colorado) Community College at noon and North Platte (Nebraska) Community College at 5 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 26. They wrap up play at the Otero Junior College Tournament on Saturday against Barton (Kansas) Community College at 10 a.m. and Dodge City (Kansas) Community College at 2 p.m.
