TORRINGTON – Coming off a double overtime loss on the road to rival Western Nebraska Community College on Tuesday, the Eastern Wyoming College men’s basketball team responded with a 60-59 win over No. 11-ranked College of Southern Idaho on Saturday afternoon.
The Lancers had three players in double figures in the victory. Freshman Terrance Jones led the way with 15 points, while Nikolas Gustavson added 14. Sophomore Carter Berish had 12. Berish and Gustavson also grabbed a team-high six rebounds.
The Lancers held a 35-28 lead at halftime and fended off a second-half charge by CSI in the second half.
The Lancers led 57-56 with under 20 seconds remaining in the game, but a 3-pointer with six seconds left put the visitors in front 59-57.
Following a pair of timeouts with 4.7 seconds left on the clock, EWC inbounded the ball near midcourt.
Jones swished a 30-footer at the buzzer to seal the win for the Lancers.
The win improved the men’s team to 3-1 on the season.
In the women’s game, the Lady Lancers fell 88-77 to the Idaho school.
CSI jumped out to a 23-16 lead, but EWC battled back to take a 40-38 lead into halftime.
The visitors responded with a 29-point third quarter to take a 67-51 lead into the final quarter.
Sophomore Montse Gutierrez Ibanez led EWC with 17 points, while freshman Natalie Kalaydjiev added 15. Freshmen Mara Neira and Janette Hanni tossed in 13 and 14, respectively for the Lady Lancers.
Both EWC teams are back in action at action at the Salt Lake City Community College Tournament Feb. 4-6.
