EWC Lancers midseason review

TORRINGTON – The Eastern Wyoming College men have 13 games under their belt, while the women have played 14 games and both teams have 16 games remaining on their regular season schedule, with all coming with the turn of the new year.

Lady Lancers

The Lady Lancers have had a solid first-half of the season, posting an 8-6 record. After they started the season 2-4, the EWC women went on a six-game winning streak, upping their record to 8-4. Recently, the Lady Lancers fell to Western Nebraska Community College and Casper College to end 2017 on a two-game losing streak.

So far this year, the Lady Lancers have averaged 75.3 points per contest, while averaging 43 percent from the field and 34 percent from behind the arc. In each game, EWC has come away with 37.3 boards and racked up 15.1 assists.

Four Lady Lancers have averaged double-figures each game this season. Pamela Bethel is EWC’s top-scorer, averaging 15.2 points per contest. She has also averaged a double-double this season, filling her stat line with 12.7 boards, along with 1.5 steals and 1.6 blocks.

Lauren O’Connell is not far behind in the scoring department, tallying 14.9 points per game. She also has averaged 2.8 boards and 1.8 assists. Abril Rexach Roure (13.3 PPG) and Ines Salat Margarit (11.4 PPG) round out the top scorers for EWC. Rexach has averaged 2.6 boards, 4 assists and 1.9 steals per game, while Margarit adds 3.6 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.9 steals each contest.

Cathlyn Knutson (6.4 PPG), Nicole Cutler (5.8 PPG) and Emily Buchanan (4 PPG) have also made big contributions in scoring this season. The trio has also combined for 6.6 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.4 steals per game.

The Lady Lancers have 16 games starting in 2018 to close out their regular season. Thirteen of EWC’s 16 games come against division opponents. The Lady Lancers have nine home games remaining this season, starting with a game against Trinidad State Junior College on Jan. 5 at 5:30 p.m.

Lancers

The EWC men sit at 1-12 on the season, with nine losses in a row. The Lancers’ win came over Planet Athletes (111-104) on Nov. 10. Although they have lost 12 games, many of them are close, losing five games by 10 or fewer points.

To date, the Lancers average 87.5 points per game on 46 percent shooting from the field and 39 percent shooting from behind the arc. Each game, EWC averages 38 boards, 14.4 assists and 7.2 steals.

Walker Korell, averaging 14.6 points per game, is the leading scorer for the Lancers so far this season. He has rounded his stat line out with averages of 3.8 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 steal per game. Brandon Meadows is second on the scoring list, pouring in 13.8 points per contest, along with 5.6 rebounds, 1.1 assists and 1.4 steals per game.

A trio of Lancers average just over 11 points per game. Jonathan Morrobel turns in 11.8 points per game, while Nick Holmes adds 11.5 and Jordan Mirich adds 11.2 in the five games he has played this season. The three have averaged 11.3 rebounds, 5.2 assists and 1.7 steals. Morrobel tops the rebounding category with his 5.9 boards per game.

Alek Cosic is also big on the boards, hauling in 5.2 rebounds, along with 1.1 assists and 9.2 points per game. Rhythm Ajanku (8.5 PPG) and Kolton Wall (7 PPG) have made significant scoring contributions this winter.

Sixteen games remain for the Lancers during the regular season, including 10 at home. EWC has 14 games against division opponents to close out the season, starting with games against Trinidad State Junior College on Jan. 5 at 7:30 p.m. and Laramie County Community College on Jan. 6 at 4 p.m.
