EWC golfers take 19th at nationals

GARDEN CITY, Kan. – The Eastern Wyoming College Lancer golfers recorded a four-day score of 1,285 (+133), earning 19th May 16-19 at the NJCAA National Championships in Garden City.
“We had a good week of golf that resulted in our best ever finish at the NJCAA National Golf Championship, which was one of our goals for the four-day event,” coach Zach Smith said.
Harry Walch was the best golfer for the Lancers over the four days, shooting a +26 to finish tied for 62nd. He shot an 83 on the first day, followed by scores of 73 and 77. He closed out the tournament with an 81.

Arvy Shongwe shot a four-day score of 320 (+32), tying for 76th. He progressively got better throughout the week. His first round was an 82, followed by two rounds of 80. On the final day, Shongwe carded a 78.
Jared Pilkington Adrian Ruiz-Torrez and Denton Shaw were within four strokes of each other when the dust settled. All three shot in the 70’s for the first round, with Pilkington leading the way (75). Ruiz-Torrez carded a 77 and Shaw added a 79 on the first day. Pilkington was the only one of the three to dip back in to the 70’s, scoring a 78 in the third round. In the second and fourth rounds, he shot an 88.
Ruiz-Torrez rounded out his week, shooting a, 85, 82 and 87. In the second round, Shaw slid back, scoring an 89, but he rebounded to score an 82 and 83. Pilkington finished +41 (tied for 90th), Ruiz-Torrez finished +43 (tied for 95th) and Shaw was not far behind, ending up +45 (97th).
“We felt like we left plenty of shots on the course, but we enjoyed the experience and I’m going to really miss the guys that won’t be with us next year,” Smith said.
Odessa College won the team title, finishing the week at +14. Indian Hill Community College (+18) and Midland Community College (+31) rounded out the top three.
