EWC falls to No. 10 WNCC

TORRINGTON – On Tuesday evening, the Eastern Wyoming College volleyball team opened the home portion of the schedule against the No. 10-ranked Western Nebraska Community College Lady Cougars.

The Lady Lancers were swept by WNCC, but the home team kept it close throughout the entire match.

EWC held leads in the first two sets but trailed the entire third set in a 25-21, 25-23, 25-21 loss.

In the first set, Western Nebraska jumped out to a 6-2 lead, but freshman middle Siale Unufe tipped the ball over the net, ending the Lady Cougar run.

EWC continued to chip away at the deficit and tied the game at eight with a kill by sophomore Ana Djurovic. On the ensuing point, a WNCC’s attack landed long, giving the Lady Lancers a 9-8 advantage.

Freshman Sydney Anderson’s block point pushed EWC’s lead to 10-8, but the Cougars scored the next four points to regain the lead. It was a lead which they never surrendered for the remainder of the set.

In the second set, Unufe’s block set the tone early for the Lady Lancers. Djurovic added a kill and an ace, while Anderson also added a kill, pushing the EWC lead to 7-4.

Western Nebraska tied the set at eight, but a serving error quikly broke the tie. EWC’s lead in the set reached as many as 14-10. The Lady Lancers still held on to the lead 23-22 before the Lady Cougars scored the final three points of the set.

In the third, Western Nebraska raced out to a 9-3 lead and never trailed for the remainder of the match. EWC did cut the deficit to as few as 24-21 before the Cougars capped off the match with the final point.

EWC goes 1-4 in Colorado

The Lady Lancers also went 1-4 over the weekend at the Otero Junior College Invite in LaJunta, Colorado.

The team’s lone win came on Friday morning against Lamar (Colorado) Community College in a 3-1 (25-17, 14-25, 25-17, 25-23) victory.

EWC lost to Otero on Thursday evening 3-1 (25-21, 18-25, 25-22, 27-25) and capped off Friday with a 3-2 (22-25, 21-25, 26-24, 27-25, 15-13) loss to North Platte (Nebraska) Community College.

On Saturday, the Lady Lancers capped off the weekend with a pair of losses to No. 19-ranked Barton (Kansas) Community College and to Dodge City (Kansas) Community College.

The Barton Cougars swept EWC 25-14, 25-14, 25-19, while the Lady Lancers were able to pick up a set win in a 25-23, 23-25, 25-23, 25-22 loss to the Dodge City Conquistadors.

The Lady Lancers are now 4-6 on the season  and will head to a weekend tournament in Weatherford, Texas on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 8-9.
