TORRINGTON – The Eastern Wyoming College Lady Lancers’ opening game in the Verl Petsch Jr. Activities Center was ruined Wednesday by a loss to Northeastern Junior College in three sets.
In the first set, NJC held the wire-to-wire win. The Lady Lancers failed to come out of the gates strong, with the Lady Plainsmen building a seven-point lead (13-6). EWC did manage to rebound, bringing the game to within one, with the score sitting at 20-19, but NJC closed the door, grabbing the 25-21 win.
The Lady Lancers came out strong in the second set, holding a lead for the first part of the set. NJC withstood the initial surge and tied the game up, 9-9. With the game tied, the visitors took control, taking the lead and never letting go, picking up the win 25-18.

EWC came out hotter in the third set, growing a 4-0 lead, including three aces from Kylee Tresch. NJC tied the game up at three times, including at 16. The Lady Plainsmen strung together several points after the tie at 16, winning the set and match, 25-20.
Tresch recorded all three kills for the Lady Lancers, while also making contributions in assists (nine) and digs (eight). Alex Simmerman led EWC in assists, with 13. She also tied Tresch in digs, with eight. Helena Khouri and Jaysie Thomas both chipped in eight digs apiece.
Leading EWC in digs was Dawson Sharman, who accounted for nine. She also tied Katie Strohschein in kills, with six. Shaniah Freeseman added another five kills in the loss. Freeseman and Precious Williams each had a block.
The Lady Lancers are still searching for their first win on the young season, as they sit at 0-8. EWC hits the road for the Colorado Northeastern Tournament this weekend in Rangely, Colo.
