East’s Trowbridge joins ranks of Lady Lancers

TORRINGTON – Cheyenne East senior Lexi Trowbridge signed her letter of intent Tuesday to play volleyball for the Eastern Wyoming College Lady Lancers in the fall of 2018.

“I’m excited but kind of nervous at the same time,” Trowbridge said. “It’s just an amazing feeling to finally sign and everything is settled and for real.”

For the past three seasons, Trowbridge has been the Thunderbirds’ top setter. As a sophomore in 2015, she recorded 510 assists, while rounding out her stat line with 25 aces and 93 digs. Her 7.4 assists per game ranked fourth in 4A. A season ago, the new EWC commit turned in 608 assists to lead her team, along with 25 digs and 145 digs. She ranked eighth in 4A with 6.6 assists per game.

In her final campaign with the Thunderbirds, Trowbridge saw the court for 84 sets, tallying up 448 assists, 123 digs and 18 aces. For the third season in a row, she ranked in the top-10 in 4A in the assist category, sitting seventh with an average of 5.3 assists per game.

“Lexi will add a whole other dynamic to our team. She is a phenomenal athlete and she is super fast,” EWC coach Julie Sherbeyn said. “Her hands are smooth, clean and fast. Her experience coming from Cheyenne East, from such a strong program, will add another speed to our offense.”

Trowbridge and the Thunderbirds have had great success over the past several years. Since Trowbridge stepped onto the court for East as a freshman in 2014, when she played in three games, the Thunderbirds have won three state titles and finished as state runners-up once.

“Any athlete from that program is going to offer a lot of good stuff with play experience and volleyball IQ,” Sherbeyn said. “I was excited that she was interested in our program.”

From freshman to junior year, Trowbridge and the rest of the Thunderbirds were at the top of the mountain, winning three-straight state titles. This past season, East came up short in the championship game against Kelly Walsh, falling in four sets. Over Trowbridge’s four years at East, the Thunderbirds have posted a 120-21 record, including a 30-1 mark in 2015.

“Having (Coach Dan) Box my first three years, he pushed me and made me the athlete I am today so I give a lot of credit to him. It was always a competitive feeling. When you came to practice, everybody pushed you to be better,” Trowbridge said. “I’m really competitive and I hope I can bring a competitive edge to some other people.”

Trowbridge is the Lady Lancers’ first signee of the year. The opening date to sign under NJCAA rules was Nov. 1.

“I’m extremely pleased that she was the first signing of the year and I hope this is the start of something great for our 18-19 season,” Sherbeyn said.
